George And Amal Clooney Feel ‘Responsible’ To Teach Their Kids To Have ‘Empathy’ For Those Less Fortunate

George and Amal Clooney are a power couple, doing amazing philanthropic work outside their respective careers. While they are obviously extremely in love with each other, the kind of love they have for their children is insurmountable.

In June 2017, George and Amal’s lives changed forever after they welcomed their twins Ella and Alexander. But George admitted that he and Amal never planned on having kids, as he revealed it was only after they got married that they decided to have children.

"We didn't plan on it," George told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview at their home in Lake Como in Italy.

“We never talked about it until after we were married, which is funny. There was an assumption that we didn't want them. And then, after the wedding, Amal and I were talking and we just felt we'd gotten very lucky, both of us, and we should share whatever good luck we've got. It would seem self-centered to just have that belong to us,” he added.

In the same interview from 2017, Amal shared what surprised her in the then-four years they'd have been together. 

“What a great father he is,” Amal described George, much to the latter’s surprise when he found out what his wife said about him.

George proved that he is a doting father to his kids after he proudly showed off photos of his kids in an interview with the Daily Mail in September 2017 during the Toronto Film Festival that year.

Since it was the first time he had been away from his kids, George said he could only wish that his kids were with him during the trip.

“Look, today is the first time since they’ve been born that I’ve been away from them, and my wife’s sending me pictures and I’m sitting here thinking, ‘God, I wish I was with my kids’ — and that’s fun,” George admitted.

Just as he is a great dad, George is also an amazing husband to his wife who he admires for the sacrifices she makes for their children — particularly praising Amal for getting only a few hours of sleep.

“And I have such admiration for my wife because she’s breastfeeding them and getting about two hours of sleep per interval, and the love they have for her is a sight to see and it’s beautiful,” he said.

In the same interview, George talked about the responsibility he and Amal have in raising their children.

“I have always felt a great sense of responsibility to other people in the world, but when you have children of your own, you realize you are responsible for their lives in a way you haven't been before,” he said.

“And you become conscious that you want to make an example of your own life that they will follow. I want to make sure my children understand they have been given things other children haven't been by accident of birth,” he added.

George also pointed out that it’s his and Amal’s job to remind their children about how fortunate they are to have the kind of life that they have.

"They could just as easily have been born in Syria and their lives would have been completely different,” he said.

“It's challenging to remind children who have been born into this glass of celebrity and money to have empathy for people who aren't as fortunate as they are. That's going to be Amal's and my job to teach our children, and it's an important one,” he added.

Fans might notice that George and Amal keep their children away from social media — and the couple has a perfectly good reason why. It’s not only because they want to keep their children away from the limelight but also because they want to protect them as well.

In February 2022, George penned an open letter to the media appealing not to post photos of their children for their safety. His wife Amal, on the other hand, works as a humanitarian lawyer which might put their children at risk should photos of them be published.

Five years later, George and Amal’s kids are now all grown up. But George admitted they might not have anticipated their kids — particularly his son — becoming pranksters. In an interview with CBS Mornings, the American actor and filmmaker said his son had been pranking him and Amal in Italian — a language they both don’t speak.

“We’ve made a terrible mistake. We’ve taught them Italian, but we don’t speak Italian. So, we’ve armed them with a language that they can harm us with and we don’t really know what they (mean),” George said.

But Amal said it was George who taught their son how to be a prankster.

“Our son is basically now a prankster. And he (George) basically taught him all of these lessons. And he’s now pranking his dad back,” Amal said.
