Gay Teen Forced Out Of Home Will Pay Nothing To Attend Georgetown University

When a Florida teen revealed to his parents that he was gay they kicked him out. His homelessness actually threatened his scholarship to Georgetown; the college refused to give a scholarship to a person who is homeless while in high school. However, with the help of his community, Seth Owen will still be attending Georgetown University.

Citizens of Jacksonville, Florida actually set up a GoFundMe page to help Seth earn the money he needed. When his goal was met, he took to the GoFundMe page to thank all his patrons. He also thanked the people at the Office of Student Financial Services for all their help.

Now Owen is going to attend school completely free, nothing coming from his own pockets.

Jane Martin, one of Owen's high school teachers, helped Owen when possible. She talked about Owen's struggles, explaining that his parents gave him an ultimatum: either attend church or find another place to live. Seth Owen left his home in February. He refused to attend the church that attacked him. He had already endured conversion therapy.

Originally, Owen was looking at $20,000 for his first year of college. Without his parents help it was going to be impossible for him to attend Georgetown. Owen was co-valedictorian, captain of the swim team, and a member of the National Honor Society; he was a perfect match for Georgetown.

However, his dream school was looking far out of reach until his community chipped in. They helped him raise over $140,000.

You can see Seth Owen's own side of the story in a video below.

Georgetown responded to questions, but they refused to comment on Owen's specific situation. They said that they will always work with students whose financial situation changed after admission. They explained that they offered job opportunities, scholarships, grants, and loans for all students.

College is getting more and more expensive each year, even outgrowing the rate of inflation. Seth Owen was one of the lucky ones. He had a supportive community who didn't hesitate to help him out. Not everyone is this lucky, but Owen's story is an inspiration. Despite his family being against him, Owen is going to be able to achieve his dreams.

Showing this story to someone in a similar situation could be the motivation they need to accomplish their goals.
