Do you know anyone who has been married for 15 years? Probably, but do you know someone who has been married for 40 years?

A lot of people would think that it isn't possible to be married to the same person for four decades. Every married couple certainly doesn't make it to that milestone, but when a couple does, you know that there is something special about the two of them. One couple is about to reach the 40-year mark, and this couple is none other than Gary Sinise and his wife, Moira Harris!

Gary Sinise is the actor who played Lt. Dan Taylor in "Forrest Gump." He is also the man who worked tirelessly for veterans, and he married Moira Harris in 1981. Ms. Harris is also an actor. When Gary and Moira met, they were years away from being household names. They were attending college in Illinois. Now, the three children they've had together are all grown up.

Gary did an interview with Parade, and he told the reporter all about how he and his wife made their marriage work. It's a secret that every person can make use of even if we aren't currently in a relationship. For Gary the key to a happy marriage is:

A sense of humor. My wife’s a loving, funny, Irish-spirited person, and I’m still surprised at some of the things she says. She makes me laugh every day.

This is one couple who doesn't let a day go by when one isn't making the other laugh. They are in each other's corners when times are good, but they are also with each other when times are bad.

Ms. Harris struggled with alcoholism, and Gary was her rock during that emotionally turbulent time. He wrote about this time in the book "Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service." He stated that he wouldn't have written about that subject unless his wife expressed her support for it, as reported by The Day. The chapter about Ms. Harris' alcoholism was difficult for both of them, but she was happy to have him include it because it was part of their journey toward strengthening their family and their faith, and she thought that it might help other families dealing with the same issue.

Taking Comfort in Religion

Gary Sinise is a Roman Catholic. On December 24, 2010, he converted to the faith. Ms. Harris had already converted in 2000. Gary began to attend mass with his wife in 1999. She was confirmed in 2000 on Easter, and after that, the church became very important to Gary. He was glad to have a place of comfort after the 9/11 attacks occurred in 2001. Gary's path toward becoming a Catholic was a little unusual. Gary didn't tell anyone, but he began to attend confirmation classes at that time. Gary chose Morton's Steakhouse as the place where he would surprise his family with his news, as reported by The Dialog. He invited them all to dinner on Christmas Eve of 2010.

The family hopped into the car, and Gary drove to the church, and they wondered what they were doing there. Gary brought them in, and the priest confirmed him. He thought that it was beautiful! Gary Sinise started his foundation because he believed that it is better to serve others than to serve yourself. Gary believes that his foundation is a calling. He was a movie actor, a television actor and owned a theater company, and he had great success doing all of those things, but he believes that he did it so that he could give back. We believe that Gary Sinise is a wonderful man who just happens to be famous. His heart is always in the right place!
