Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot, 34, teamed up with 21 different celebrities who are self-quarantining to sing a montage of John Lennon’s Imagine this Thursday. Gadot’s video, which she posted on Instagram to her 36.8 million-fan Instagram account, was in the spirit of Italian residents who have been singing from balconies in solidarity with each other in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Gadot, who is perhaps best known for her role as Wonder Woman, posted the video from day six of her self-quarantine on Thursday.
“I’ve got to say that the past few days have got me feeling a bit philosophical,” she said in the 3-minute Instagram video. “This virus has affected the entire world — you know, everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from. We’re all in this together.”

Gadot goes on to explain that she was inspired to create the celebrity montage after seeing a video of an Italian man who, stuck in self-quarantine, serenaded his neighbors with a trumpet rendition of Imagine.
“There was something so powerful and pure about this video,” Gadot added. Shortly thereafter, Gadot begins to sing Lennon’s famous 70s-era single, followed by other celebrities in what is a montage of stars like Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, Zoë Kravitz and even the Australian singer Sia.
Imagine is the perhaps the perfect choice during this trying time of shuttered borders and quarantines given that the lyrics speak to a unified, peaceful world. Lines like “Imagine there's no countries, Imagine all the people living life in peace and Imagine all the people sharing all the world” are especially fitting to Gadot’s message of solidarity. The notion that we are “all in this together.”
Gadot’s turn to the unifying power of music is part of a wider trend that began in Italy following the coronavirus outbreak and the ensuing government-imposed lockdown this March. What do people who crave social interaction and community do when they can’t leave their homes?
Italians have made the best of their situation, taking to their balconies to play music and socialize. From his balcony in Florence, Italian opera singer Maurizio Marchini serenaded surrounding residents with the well-known Nessun Dorma, according to The Washington Post. The video, which has more than 4 million views, has spread like wildfire across the internet. In Palermo, a DJ even took to his balcony to deliver an uplifting dance music set.
The Italian spirit has spread to other countries under lockdown, too. According to The Post, dozens of people in Seville, Spain even began an impromptu balcony fitness club even with its very own fitness instructor, Gonzalo, who motivated the onlookers from a lower balcony.
Whether it’s 21 celebrities signing Imagine on Instagram or an Italian opera singer who takes to his balcony, the message seems to be the same. Like Gadot said, this virus is affecting the entire world regardless of where you come from, which is why time like these require everyone to come together under the same banner, to show solidarity with one another.
