Some stories are so shocking and tragic, and people don't believe the tales to be true. One horrible story played out a nightmare many have. A call to 911 goes horribly wrong when the dispatcher doesn't provide the appropriate response. While rare, these events do happen.

Such was the case in New Mexico in 2015 when a frantic teenage girl placed a call about a shooting.

The shooting was a drive-by. Bullets pierced the home during a festive house party. Jaydon Chavez-Silver was hit in the neck by a bullet. He went down and started to bleed to death.

The young girl was able to compose herself despite the chaos and the danger of the event. She placed a call to 911. The average person might think 911 calls go to the police or emergency responders directly. In actuality, a dispatcher takes the call, takes in the info, and then contacts the appropriate authorities.

The conversation between the young girl and the dispatcher appears horrifying. She tried to convey the fact Jaydon was down and barely breathing. The dispatcher asked twice if Jaydon was breathing. The girl used an expletive when conveying she had told the dispatcher more than once that Jaydon was barely breathing.

The annoyed dispatcher told her to deal with the problem herself. He then disconnected the call.

Jaydon died soon after. His parents filed a lawsuit in the aftermath. The dispatcher ended up resigning, and the city settled the lawsuit. The settlement amount was for a paltry $50,000.

The shooter in the incident was eventually caught, tried, and convicted. He now serves a life sentence.

There is no positive conclusion to this story, but it does serve as a cautionary tale. Let people know they must be ready to deal with the unexpected when calling 911.
