Some Illinois residents showed their patriotism on the fourth of July in the best way ever. Kyle O’May partnered up with some of his friends to show off their pride for their country by painting his entire front lawn with the American flag.

O’May and his friend Tyler Shear started prepping O’May’s lawn for his fourth of July painting weeks ago. “We want to do our best that we can do to make it look and represent the flag the best that we can,” O’May told CBS Chicago News, “We want to make sure that this grass is in top notch shape.”

Neighbors had also noticed the men hard at work, Mike Cherry who lives in the neighborhood commented to the news on how much effort the guys have put into getting the lawn ready. “They’ve cleaned it up. I mean, they took out bushes, trees, junk, everything out of there,” he said. O’May has never served in the military but he wants to pay tribute and honor his friends and family who have fought and protected the U.S.

Shear and O’May finalized all the measurements before spray painting the red, white, and blue color onto their lawn. “Usually the saying is measure twice, cut once, but here we’re measuring twice and spraying once,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that it was drawn to scale. I did as much as I could from my side all the way to the property line.” The flag, in the end, measures approximately 40 feet by 26 feet, “I got all 50 stars in there, 13 stripes,” O’May added.

This is the second year O’May has created and displayed the flag on his front yard. He realized after the first year that he was going to have to do it every year. He said, “There’s no escaping it. It’s not just for us. It’s for men and women shipped overseas, to their community around us.” O’May hosted a fourth of July party where he collected donations for the Wounded Warrior Project.
