Retirement can be many things for different retirees. For some, it is a time to explore, have fun, travel to choice locations, and indulge in all the activities that years of endless labor kept them away from. For others, it is not as eventful; they may spend most of their time in seclusion with little or nothing to do. Nevertheless, while both of these extremes are true, several other instances of retirees exist between these two.

Oftentimes, a retirement might start as fun, but midway through, it turns out to be a drab adventure. Likewise, it could start boring and routine and become adventurous at some point. Regardless of what the case might be, it is certain that the phase of overly long days with little to no activity will show up at some point in the life of a retiree.

Besides retirement being boring and routine, one of the major cons of finally leaving an active work life is loneliness. Retirees are usually people in their mid to late sixties and upwards with grown-up kids who may have followed their paths in life and live far away from them. Thus, leaving them lonely, impacting their mental health, and causing them to fall into a shell.

For this reason, a group of retired, tight-knit friends decided that the loneliness that comes with retirement would not be their case. Hence, they bought a piece of land near Llano River, an hour’s journey from Austin, Texas, and built a retirement home where they could all live as neighbors. Long before their retirement, a group of four couples who had been lifelong friends started thinking seriously about life after retirement. The friends weighed their options and decided on an “exit strategy,” a home away from home in their own version of a tiny town. The group also wanted this place to be within a considerable distance from their location in Austin so that they could easily access and maintain the property.

With that in mind, the group purchased a large expanse of land on the Llano River and contracted the design of the building to architect Matt Garcia. The architect came up with the perfect design; five eco-friendly cabins, including four 400 square feet residential cabins and one 1,500 square feet common house where the group could spend time together. The common house was furnished with laundry facilities, a living area with a TV, a kitchen and dining area, and a guest room in case a group friend tagged along to enjoy the space. What’s more, the cabins are designed to be kind to the environment.

From the look of things, it appears that the retirement home owned by the group of friends is already fulfilling its purpose. In an interview with KENS5, one of the friends stated that having “people to support you when you have a problem” is one of the merits of the place. Another noted that the serenity of the place was a “treat.”

Besides being a vacation home for the couples, they found a way to make money from the property. Since they are not always around in the vacation retirement home, they placed it on Airbnb for people who would like to experience the serenity of nature.
