Debunking Myths About Freddie Mercury

Previously, the music industry believed that Mercury was a natural tenor. The researchers started by watching six different interviews of Mercury. During the interviews, they analyzed his speech to get a median speaking frequency of 117.3 Hz. This means that Mercury is a natural baritone.

During his life, Mercury turned down an offer to do an opera duet. At the time, he was worried that his fans would not recognize him if he sang in a baritone. Obviously, Mercury was an extremely talented singer to give the impression that he was a tenor when he was actually a baritone.

Discovering the Best Singer Ever

As a part of the study, the researchers asked singer Daniel Zangger Borch to imitate Mercury's unique singing style. When Borch sang, they record how his larynx moved at the rate of 4,000 frames per second. This was done to figure out how Mercury could actually hit some of the more insane or exceptional notes.

Previously, fans believed that Mercury had a vocal range that spanned four octaves. Researchers found out that the truth was actually different. Mercury most likely used a singing style known as subharmonics. This type of singing is when the ventricular folds within the vocal folds vibrate.

Mercury's vocal chords were essentially moving faster than the average person's vocal chords. While a typical vibrato is at 5.4 to 6.9 Hz, Freddie Mercury's vibrato clocked in at 7.04 Hz.

Since Queen began in 1970, the British band has remained a popular music group. Current members of the band include music greats like Roger Taylor and Brian May. Over the years, some of their most exceptional hits include “We Will Rock You,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Are the Champions.”

Today, the band continues to perform with vocalists like Adam Lambert and Paul Rodgers.

Freddie Mercury was the first lead vocalist for the band. Because of complications from AIDS, he passed away in 1991. He was only 45 years old at the time.

Following his death, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was given the Brit Award for Outstanding Contributions to British Music. He was also inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
