Frantic Husband Screams Over Intercom To Wake Sleeping Wife As Fire Races Toward Home

Sep 22, 2021 by apost team

Aaron Hulce and his wife Sarah live in Oregon, and in April 2021, they had a terrible scare as a wildfire closed in on their home while Aaron was away and Sarah was asleep in the house. Aaron was alerted about the fire by his neighbors, who warned him that it was quickly moving up the hillside toward his home. He tried to call his wife, but she was asleep. That was the moment when he had the brilliant idea to use their home intercom for the first time to try and wake her.

Aaron explained that they have a Ring security system in their home, and it comes with an intercom that they had never tried before. Not sure how loud his voice would be and knowing the intercom was in the living room and Sarah was asleep in the bedroom, Aaron began screaming for his wife to wake up. He repeatedly yelled until Sarah awoke and walked to the intercom to better hear what he was saying. The message was clear: get out of the house!

Sarah quickly evacuated, and firefighters were able to prevent any damage to the home. Aaron was incredibly relieved as he traveled back to the house as fast as he could. He said the entire event was terrifying, and he couldn’t help but think of the worst-case scenario. Fortunately, Sarah and the home are both safe.

Aaron and Sarah shared their story with Inside Edition and included footage from their security camera, during which you can hear the husband’s voice. After he remembered that his Ring system came with an intercom, Aaron grabbed his phone and screamed into the receiver: “Wake up Sarah!”

Aaron explained: “I didn’t know how loud it was. We’ve never used it before, so I had to make sure that she heard me, so that’s why I was so loud and screaming. I was thinking the absolute worst.” It is heartbreaking to hear the fear in Aaron’s voice while he yelled out to his wife, but his quick thinking likely saved her life.

Waking up to a strange sound she had never heard before, Sarah rushed downstairs to the living room to see what it was. “All of a sudden this noise was coming out of the speakers. Something I’ve never heard of in my whole entire life,” she said. “But never in my wildest dreams would I ever think — would I hear, ‘Sarah, get out of the house. There’s a huge fire coming up the hillside.’”

The Hulce family is still a little shaken up over the incident. Aaron shared with Inside Edition: “It’s tough. My voice is shaking just thinking about it. That was a rough day — a really, really rough day.” Wildfires move more quickly uphill, so the danger to the family was very real. Thankfully, due to incredible work by the local fire department, there were no damages sustained to the home and Sarah was uninjured.
