A teacher in Florida has given one of her students more than an amazing education. Amy Krusemark, a math teacher at Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport gave one of her most talented students a home and a future as the boy’s foster mom.

Robert Hurley’s first steps in life were fraught with difficulty. Robert grew up in a high crime neighborhood with a mother that dealt with drugs and a father who he hasn’t seen since the age of six. Struggling to find stability, Robert would later recall strangers being in his home at all hours of the day and night. Eventually, the situation became so bad that the authorities decided to remove Robert from the home when he was 9 years old. The young boy then entered the foster system, being shuffled from home to home for years until finally ending up in a group home.

As a sophomore in high school, Robert got the most difficult news imaginable from the Florida Department of Children and Families: the young teen was close to the maximum number of times he could be transferred to group homes. In danger of being moved to another county or even a different state, school administrators did everything they could to keep Robert at Boca Ciega High School. It was then that Amy Krusemark stepped into the case. School administrators asked Amy to write a letter to the state vouching for Robert, but the teacher felt that she could do more for the teenage boy. Amy previously fostered children and, after discussing it with her family, invited Robert to live in her home.

Amy’s love and patience has changed Robert’s life. The teen spent the rest of his high school career living just like anyone else his age, enjoying vacations with his new foster family and even learning how to drive a stick shift. Now a senior, Robert is his class’s valedictorian and has received acceptance letters from multiple top tier colleges. Robert and Amy’s story soon became a viral hit. In an interview with reporters, Amy beamed with pride at Robert’s success, showing the cameras Robert’s acceptance letters from Duke, Stanford, and Yale. All in all, Robert and Amy’s story shows how lives can change when you open your heart and your home to a child in need.
