While many people simply know Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan Taylor from the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump," the famous actor is also a true humanitarian.

Sinise runs his own foundation that is dedicated to providing veterans, defenders, first responders, and their families with the financial and emotional support that they deserve. In addition to serving meals and building houses, the foundation also provides emergency relief grants to those in need.

Sinise said that he was inspired to start the foundation after the tragic events that unfolded on the day of September 11, 2001. Because he comes from a family of veterans, Sinise understands the struggles that many face as they adapt to civilian life.

The actor said in an open letter on his foundation's website that he began the journey of his foundation by visiting fire stations around the New York City area. He credits the Disabled American Veterans organization for helping him to find his mission to encourage and support the wounded heroes that return home after battle. "I decided to become much more active for our defenders however and wherever I could," Gary said

One of the foundation's key initiatives is to provide smart homes for those veterans who were severely wounded while serving the country. These homes are modified to fit the new lifestyle of the veterans needing extra accessibility. It was also recently reported that Sinise helped 1,700 children of fallen soldiers visit Walt Disney World on a special trip.
