Former ‘Who’s The Boss?’ Child Star Began Delivering Packages After Hollywood Roles Dried Up

There’s a version of success people tend to hold onto when they think about former child stars. The assumption is that once you’ve been part of something big, especially a hit show, you’re set.
Danny Pintauro knows that’s not how it works. The actor, best known for playing Jonathan on “Who’s the Boss?” from 1984 to 1992, recently shared a glimpse of what his life looks like now, and it caught people off guard.
In an Instagram post in April 2026, Pintauro uploaded a photo of himself with packages filling the back seat of his car, explaining that he has been picking up shifts as an Amazon driver. “Working hard while ‘not working,’ ” he wrote, before getting more candid about the reality behind it. “The entertainment business has been soooo slow, so I’ve been doing what a lot of people do, figuring it out, showing up, and taking the work that’s there while I keep building the work I really want. 38 packages today!” It was not a complaint. It was a reflection of where he is.
After stepping away from acting for a decade, Pintauro has been trying to reestablish himself in an industry that no longer looks the way it did when he first started. “Returning to acting after a ten-year break is an uphill battle,” he told PEOPLE, explaining that television production has dropped significantly and opportunities have become far more limited. What used to be a wide-open field for actors now felt much narrower, and for someone trying to come back, that shift was impossible to ignore.

What makes Pintauro’s story resonate is not just the job itself, but the honesty behind why he was doing it. He has been clear that this is not about giving up on acting, but about staying afloat while continuing to build something meaningful. Alongside driving for Amazon Flex, he was auditioning, teaching at Young Actors Theatre Camp, growing his coaching studio, and taking on creative work wherever he could find it. For him, this phase is about movement, not defeat.
“There’s no shame in staying in motion while the entertainment business finds its footing,” he told PEOPLE.
That perspective comes from experience. After “Who’s the Boss?” ended, Pintauro stepped away from the spotlight to attend Stanford, later navigating deeply personal challenges, including being publicly outed, struggling with addiction, and receiving an HIV diagnosis, according to PEOPLE. When he eventually returned to acting, it was not with certainty, but with the understanding that things had changed.
He has also addressed one of the biggest misconceptions people still carry about actors from that era. Many assume that the success of a show like his meant long-term financial security. Pintauro said that was far from the truth.
“People overestimate what residuals from a sitcom in the ’80s and ’90s look like,” he explained.
He shared that while he invested some of what he earned, much of it went toward his education and early adult life. There was no endless safety net waiting for him. And in the middle of all the assumptions about what his life should look like now, Pintauro summed it up in the simplest way possible:
“It’s not like there’s just been endless money sitting there.”
