Football games can get very competitive. The opposing teams battle it out on the gridiron and have to put all personal feelings aside in order to win. Sometimes, however, it can be very hard to put aside personal issues in order to focus on the game.

This was the case recently for Ty Jordan, a student at West Mesquite High School in Sherman, Texas, who plays for the school football team. His mother had recently been diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and the disease had spread to her bones. The entire family rallied around to help support the woman as she fought for her life. And not just the family-Ty's teammates were all there for him, providing emotional support so he could in turn support his mother.

One night, West Mesquite High School played Sherman High School in a game of football. The game was very competitive and went well; all of the players on both teams gave it their all. Senior Gage Smith was a player for Sherman High School. He knew Ty because they used to play football together on a select team.

After their football game, Gage approached Ty and expressed his sympathy and support for Ty's mother. The two former friends easily put aside their football rivalry and shared a spontaneous prayer together, out there on the field, two rivals united in a common cause. A photo of the encounter rapidly made it onto Twitter. A stranger commented on the photo "We could all learn a lesson from these two fine young men."

“Football brings people together in so many different ways, and that was just one example of it that night,” Gage stated later. Coach Martinez of Sherman High School agreed, and said that Gage was a very respected player and had always shown excellent judgement and compassion.

This wonderful story of compassion and selflessness would make a great topic of conversation with your family and friends.
