CBS 17 reported on June 24, 2021 that 35 people were pulled from the building and two people were pulled from the rubble. Balboa ran to the scene after he heard screaming from the pile of debris. A team of firefighters worked together to rescue the boy and pull him from the mess of broken furniture and building remnants, as they led him to safety. Using his flashlight to guide the way, one firefighter supported the boy over his shoulder and carried him out of the debris.

Charles Burkett, the mayor of Surfside, Florida, told news outlets the day of the collapse that he still believed there were more people trapped in the rubble, according to CBS 17. He called the situation "unspeakable." "But there is something really wrong here that we've got to figure out," Burkett added.
