Food Network Chef Carl Ruiz Has Passed Away, Age 44

Food Network regular and owner of La Cubana restaurant in New York has died at the age of 44.

Tributes have come out on social media from fellow celebrity chefs over the sad news including Guy Fieri who wrote, “I have no words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family…Carl ’The Cuban’ Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him.”

Ruiz had appeared on a few of Guy’s Food Network shows including "Guy's Grocery Games" and "Guy's Ranch Kitchen.” He also had his own YouTube series "Omg Carl's Food Show.

Chef Matt Farah wrote on Instagram that Ruiz had “passed away peacfully in his sleep” and shared a few stories of his dear friend. He continued on to say that “life feels a lot more gray today.”

Another fellow celebrity chef Jet Tila posted a tribute including the hashtag “Ruizing.” According to Urban Dictionary “Ruizing is a way of living that started with chef Carl Ruiz from New Jersey. It's enjoying great drinks, food, smoking cigars, and doing what you want. You must drink with pinkies up!”

La Cubana also issued a statement on social media to say, “He was a mighty force of down home Cuban cuisine, and lived life to the fullest, just as he cooked—with “dancing always” as the most important ingredient.”

The post also announced a continuing legacy for their beloved Executive Chef: they will be establishing The Carl Ruiz Scholarship Foundation.
