First Responders Ditch Ambulance To Save Patient On Icy Road, Push Gurney For Mile In Cold

Rain or shine, the work of a firefighter is never done. America's heroes are always ready to dive into the heart of a battle and brave any condition to save lives.

In Missouri, a pair of first responders demonstrated the smarts and courage firefighters display every day on the job to rescue a patient after the ambulance they were riding in got stuck.

It was just the start of another shift for Maryland Heights Firefighter Shaylor Taetz when he received the report of a bus crash in a St. Louis suburb. Taetz and his partner arrived as fast as they could, but their speed came at a cost: Their ambulance slid on the slick winter roads and crashed into a guardrail.

In an interview with KSDK,Taetz explained that the icy conditions were only getting worse as the morning progressed. The bus was stranded, and it would take a while for another ambulance to arrive.

Instead of making the patient wait, Taetz and his partner loaded her onto a gurney and began to push her to the hospital. It was at least a mile to the SSM Health Depaul Hospital, but that didn't stop the duo from getting their patient the medical attention she needed.

A passerby named Carol Parks snapped a shot of the firefighters pushing the patient in the cold winds and shared it to social media. The same photo was reposted by the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District, which you can check out for yourself below along with a heart-warming caption.
