First Look: Sam Elliott In Costume On Set Of '1883'

Fans of the Paramount Network neo-western “Yellowstone” received both good and bad news on July 1 in an exclusive from Deadline. The bad news? “Yellowstone’s” fourth season premiere has been pushed to November 2021, according to Deadline’s reporting. That means that fans will have to wait a little longer than expected to catch up with the Dutton family and their sprawling cattle ranch.

The good news is that we have a few more details about “1883,” a “Yellowstone” prequel series on Paramount+ that, according to Deadline, “tells the story of the Dutton Family’s move Westward from poverty to the promised land in Montana.”  “The spinoff series tells the story of Manifest Destiny that brought settlers seeking an escape from poverty into conflict with the Native Americans who lived on the unspoiled plains,” the publication adds regarding “1883’s” plot. The article reports that production for the prequel series will begin this summer in Texas with hopes to have a premiere ready for December. And among the esteemed actors and actresses for the new show is certified American cowboy Sam Elliott, according to TVLine.

What’s more, Nic Sheridan, the wife of the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan, posted a photo on Instagram (below) in August with Elliott while the actor was on set. Sporting long hair, which is likely for his new role, the 77-year-old actor looks fittingly western and prepared for the new show. In addition, a “Yellowstone” fan who claims to live near the “1883” set posted two unofficial photos that the Redditor says show Sam Elliott and Tim McGraw on set and in full costume.

According to Variety, “1883” is part of a larger deal that Taylor Sheridan has with ViacomCBS, which means that the prequel is the first of many projects.

“Taylor Sheridan is a visionary creative whose work has reinvented genres and amassed fan bases around the globe; we are thrilled he calls ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment his home,” said Chris McCarthy, MTV Entertainment’s president, in a statement released to Variety. “We couldn’t be more excited to build upon our partnership with him, expand the Yellowstone universe and showcase Taylor’s boundless talent across all of our brands and platforms.”

Other members of the new “1883” cast include country singer Tim McGraw, as previously mentioned, as well as Faith Hill, another country music star.

“This is truly a dream job,” McGraw said in a statement released to TVLine. “Taylor has found a way of storytelling that brilliantly creates these epic dramas and family sagas with so much depth and creativity. The Duttons are tremendous characters, and it’s so thrilling to be able to bring them to life. As a kid growing up riding horses, you think about dream jobs like this, and I am just so excited to work with this amazing cast and crew.”

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Faith Hill said of her role. “The Duttons are a formidable family, and it is an absolute dream to bring such a strong female character like Margaret Dutton to life. I am humbled and honored to work with Taylor and his entire team.”

But much of the buzz surrounding “1883” is thanks to Elliott’s inclusion, as he is a veteran of American westerns.

“It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer,” Elliott said in a statement released to TVLine.

“I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

“You had me at Sam Elliott. I just need a time and day and I’m there,” one fan commented on TVLine’s article.

“I love me a cowboy 😀 and Elliott makes a perfect one as will Tim McGraw. I haven’t seen Faith Hill in anything but I’m sure she’ll be great. Can’t wait!” another excited reader wrote.

Samuel Pack Elliott was born on Aug. 9, 1944 in Sacramento to Glynn Mamie, a high school teacher, and Henry Elliott. While Sam Elliott spent the early years of his life in California’s capital city, he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon when he was in his teens. After graduating high school in Oregon, Elliott bounced around before finding his calling. He enrolled at the University of Oregon, only to drop out two semesters later. Eventually, however, he returned to college and began to act. Following his father’s death at the age of 54, Elliott began his acting career in earnest, earning his first role on TV in the legal drama “Judd, for the Defense.” From then on, Elliott was often cast in westerns thanks to his appearance and deep voice.

Since his early roles in westerns like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids,” “Felony Squad,” “Gunsmoke” and “Lancer,” Elliott has become one of Hollywood’s go-to cowboys. He’ll reprise his role as one of America’s most beloved cowboy’s on “1883” in December 2021.
