A domestic violence situation often warrants making a decision by the victim to leave the relationship and the home to find somewhere else to live. Sometimes, the victim has pets that need to be kept safe as well. Pets are also emotional therapy for some people.

Fortunately, a domestic violence shelter in Broward County, Florida has taken pets into consideration, allowing those who stay at the shelter to have their pets with them for the duration of their stay.

There are two other shelters in the state that allow pets in domestic violence shelters, but with this third one opening, it means that more people will get the help that they need without worrying about where their pets will live.

Many people tend to stay in a relationship or at least stay in the home where the abuse is taking place because they don't know what to do with their pets.

They don't want to take them to an animal shelter because they don't want them to be put to sleep or adopted by someone else because they will lose one of the only real companions that they have.

There are many situations that involve the pet being abused as well, which is another reason as to why domestic violence victims tend to stay. They want to make sure the pet isn't killed by the person who is committing the abuse.
