Every child in a healthy family is precious to its parents. And any time a parent is forced to leave a child behind, it hits like a punch to the stomach.

Many movies, plays, and books have been dedicated to this concept.

But the concept of abandonment is not restricted to dramatic tales. A story that unfolded in Houston recently reminds us all of how devastating this issue can be for everyone involved.

Corterra Payton is the proud mother of 11-month-old Duran. But sadly, other aspects of Corterra's life were a little more complicated and she had trouble finding work.

She explains the difficulties in her life due to her lack of income. She says she also had to deal with a boyfriend with an explosive temper and violent tendencies. An argument between them caused her to flee the apartment she shared with her boyfriend. But she soon ran into another serious problem. She had no money for a hotel and her family was unable to come to get her from Cleveland, Texas.

The altercation between her and her boyfriend took place after midnight so she was unable to spend the night in a shelter. She was told to return the next day. The last thing she wanted to do was spend the night in the car with her son. Corterra explained her fear of not being able to protect her son from people that would do them harm.

The state of Texas has a Safe Haven law that Corterra thought could help her situation. The law allows parents who are unable to adequately take care of a child to hand the child over to an employee at a designated 'safe haven.' Safe havens include hospitals, fire stations, and stations that provide emergency services.

Payton decided to leave her child at Fire station 68 for a short period of time. She will never forget the kindness of the firefighters in her moment of desperation. The fire station was not obligated to take her baby since he was over 60 days old. However, they helped her and her son anyway.

The good news is Duran only had to stay at the fire station for one hour. The police were called and Child Protective Services found the mother and son a place to stay for the night. Payton has a job now and her family helps care for her baby until she can save money for a place of their own.
