Firefighters are definitely heroes in there communities. Firefighting and saving lives are just part of their work.

They are also responsible for helping people out in many different other ways. This includes catastrophes and medical emergencies.

Recently one fire department located in Iowa did more than their fare share at a call to a family.

Cassy Abram and her husband were made their way to the hospital. Cassy was 37-wee pregnant and thought she was in labor but was soon discharged from the hospital. She was told that it was a false alarm and she was to return home.

After returning home, things began to unfold rather quickly. Scotty, Cassy's husband, made a call to 911. Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to the call. But, there just wan't enough time. Scotty had to deliver the baby all by himself. His son, Scotty Jr., was born in no time. This bundle of joy weighed a healthy six pounds and was measured at 18 inches.

Luckily, the birth was very smooth given the circumstances of the entire event. Cassy's aunt recalls that first responders arrived within 10 minutes of the call. They even allowed for Scotty to cut the umbilical cord while in their own living room. The firefighters assisted as needed. Cassy and Scotty never expected what they walked out to when leaving their home.

The firefighters at the scene decided to call another fire engine company to come over to help clear the path for the ambulance cot. Two firefighters who were off-duty heard the call for help and rushed to the scene in their own privately-owned vehicles.

They not only cleared a path, which was covered in more than 3 inches of snow, but also did the entire driveway for the new parents.

Cassy and her new little one were placed on a stretcher covered with warm blankets and the new dad was in tow. As she is pulled outside, this is when they saw the task at hand being finished up. It was such a selfless act. Larissa, Cassy's aunt, couldn't believe what they did for them.

She knew that this wasn't their job but they didn't hesitate to do such a kind gesture.

In fact, Larissa was so amazed by the good deed of the firefighters that she decided to take a picture and post it on her Facebook page for all to see. It was shared many times, including by the Cedar Fire Department itself who were proud of the actions of the men.

The fire department was very proud of their workers and shared a post about their good deed.

It's amazing that with all the things they need to do on a daily basis that they found the time and the heart to do this selfless act.

Do you have a story about a firefighter that has helped you out in a time of need? Maybe it was a selfless act just the same as this story. Tell us all about it - and feel free to pass the story along to your friends and family!
