Men, women, and children have been repeatedly warned against the dangers of Tropical Storm Florence, which was downgraded from hurricane category 4 status. Even as a tropical storm, Florence was predicted to cause heavy flooding and millions of dollars’ worth of damages to the region.

Millions of residents chose to evacuate their homes entirely, while some decided to stay and battle against the storm. Many residents did their best to flood-proof their home, using sandbags to slow down the inevitable flooding and purchasing as many supplies as they could to ride out the storm inside.

Unfortunately, a mother and her small infant were killed in Wilmington, North Carolina on September 14th due to the storm. A tree came down during the storm while they were inside of their home, killing them both.

These two deaths are thought to be the first fatalities caused by Florence, according to CBS News. KSAZ-TV reported that the mother and child were still in their Mercer Avenue house, riding out the storm, when the storm caused a huge tree to come crashing down.

The mother and baby were killed by the wreckage. The father, who was also in the home at the time, was brought to the local hospital to be treated.

At press time, the names of the mother, infant, and father have yet to be released. There was a great deal of concern and compassion shown by the local fire department after the accident. Wilmington Fire Department was on the scene and news footage caught their emotional moment on camera.

Firefighters on the scene were filmed coming together in a huddle, kneeling and praying for the family who had been caught in the storm. Weather forecasters warn that the Carolinas will be dealing with flash flooding due to Florence.

The Governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, begged residents of the area to take the storm seriously. While the storm had been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, he implored the public to take the necessary precautions against the storms and flooding that would occur. Cooper told CBS News to please listen to him.

He stated that no one should underestimate the power of the storm.

He told residents that this storm is still a powerful one and that they should not relax or become complacent. Another person was killed in Lenoir County, North Carolina, as they were plugging in a generator. This death is also linked to the tropical storm. We are all hoping and praying for the best outcome possible for all of the people affected by this great storm.

Our hearts go out to the families dealing with Florence. Leave your thoughts and condolences in the comments and pass this on to your family and friends to warn them of the storm dangers.
