Public servants are conditioned to identify the needs of those in the community, and some take this devotion to another level. Uplifting incidents when they assist while not on the clock should be celebrated.

According to FOX, In February 2019, an account of public-spirited firefighters going a step beyond stemmed from High Springs, Florida. A Life Alert alarm activation prompted firefighters to visit an elderly woman’s home. Upon arrival, they learned that the alarm was set off inadvertently, but there was another pressing matter in the home.

The woman is a Meals on Wheels recipient, and most of these meals arrive frozen. The firemen noticed that her microwave was broken, making easy warming of the delivered food out of the question. The crew on hand went to Lowe’s Home Improvement and purchased a new microwave. They then returned to install it for her.

Yard Work Rescue

Last year, Elk Grove, California police officers Freitas and Meyerdick witnessed an elderly man tending to his yard. He looked like he could use some assistance, and without hesitation, the commendable officers assisted him in completing the job.

A local resident phoned the department to praise the men’s altruistic efforts and express her gratitude, compelling the department to release a statement on their social media saying,

“We are grateful for the community member calling us and for our officers jumping in to assist our community member.”

Harnessing Safety

In late 2017, 82-year-old Jesse Lagunas entered an Austin, Texas firehouse seeking advice on how to properly utilize a safety harness he had purchased to assist him in repairing his shed’s roof. Firefighter Daryl Burns was not yet finished with his shift and advised Mr. Lagunas that he and the other on-duty officers did not want him to endeavor to fix the roof himself.

Four first responders promised to visit the Lagunas home after their shifts ended to complete the needed roof repairs themselves.

The men were able to complete the work in a matter of minutes and were thanked with a dinner lovingly prepared by Jesse’s wife. “They said, you go and start on it, and when we get off, we’ll help you come and finish it,” Lagunas told KXAN-TV. “I thought, wow, we’re afraid that you might fall and we don’t want that to happen.”
