Firefighters All Over The USA Climbed 110 Flights Of Stairs To Honor Colleagues Who Died In 9/11

Each year on September 11 at 8:46 am, firefighters from all across the US walk up 110 flights of stairs in full gear.

The practice is a way in which firefighters honor their colleagues who tragically lost their lives on that fateful day.

The first hijacked plane hit the Twin Towers at 8:46 am, on September 11, 2001. Thousands of people had to climb down those many flights of stairs to escape the damage at the very top. Hundreds of firefighters climbed those stairs. Many of those firefighters never made it out.

According to CNN, Chelsea Renee Farmer from Georgia went to her local gym on September 11 this year to do her normal workout. That's when she noticed two firefighters in full gear on the StairMaster.

"They started at 8:46 a.m. Two firefighters at my gym walking all 110 stories of the World Trade Center and back down in remembrance of 9/11 and to honor all the fallen heroes," Farmer wrote on Social Media, as cited by CNN.

Farmer recorded what she saw and posted it on social media. The post has since reportedly garnered over 100,000 views.

According to the National Faller Firefighters Foundation, the tradition dates back to 2005 when five firefighters from Colorado did the first "9-11 Memorial Stair Climb," for which they met at a high-rise building in Denver and climbed up 110 flights of stairs.

This year, the incident in the Gym in Georgia was not the only instance where firefighters got together to pay tribute. In fact, firefighters in Vermont gathered at the Burlington International Airport and climbed the parking garage stairs 18 times, as per NBC5.

In Denver, firefighters along with first responders met at the Red Rocks Amphitheater and went up and down the stairs nine times, according to KDTVR.

Would you like to join the climb next year? Let us know your thoughts. Please be sure to pass this video on to others, so they can see it for themselves. Their special way to remember is a story worth spreading.
