A rescue team witnessed a sweet moment between a firefighter and a koala in the middle of the terrible bush fires in Southern Australia.

The brave firefighter stopped in the middle of his efforts to control the bushfires to pour a bottle of water into the poor koala’s mouth. The little animal very gladly took the offer and chugged the water. He pawed at the bottle which was soon empty and the firefighter pulled it away from him.

The sweet moment happened as smoke filled in the woods behind them.

More than 2,000 koalas perished in the fires according to Canberra Times. Their homes were destroyed on the coast. A heatwave in Australia, along with a few other factors, was the cause of the devastating bush fires.

The hot and dry conditions were amplified by the wind and the fire quickly got out of control. A spokesperson for the Climate Council of Australia stated. “As the climate is warming up, we’re getting more and more extreme hot days and currently, of course, Australia is in the grip of probably unprecedented heatwave conditions almost right across the continent.”

A state of emergency was declared. Over 7.4 million acres were burned and displaced over 800 people from their home. Six people have died.
