Sam Phelps, a local firefighter, created a GoFundMe campaign in an attempt to raise money for Cody's family. Phelps also updated the community about Cody's recovery over the period of a few months. Cody underwent brain surgery last month to remove the tumor. Doctor's removed as much as possible without damaging the surrounding brain tissue.
During the surgery, Cody contracted an infection. The surgical site infection ended up causing an aneurysm. Cody died on the operating table from a resulting stroke. Following Cody's death, Phelps released a heartfelt message from Emily Mooney. She has been counting on her strong Christian faith to carry her through these difficult times. Emily made the news of Cody's death public by saying that his strong fight ended in the "arms of Jesus".
Emily also mentioned that their fight is not over. She said that the fight will continue in honor of Cody. Two of Cody and Emily's children are medically fragile as well. The family is in need of significant financial aid to cover the medical bills for Cody and his children. His two kids will need medical attention for years to come. As Cody was the sole provider of the family, Emily is now left without a stream of income.
Family and friends speak highly of Cody as a person who was friends with everyone. An endless number of people came to the hospital to visit. This was a testament to Cody's character. Cody's primary goal was to serve others. He clearly accomplished this life goal as a loving father, amazing friend and dedicated firefighter.
