Fiancé Contemplates Canceling Wedding After Truth About Her Partner's Finances Comes Out

Getting married comes with plenty of excitement. Planning the perfect day for you and your partner is extremely romantic and can be a lot of fun. Sadly, one bride wanted to put her wedding on hold for the time being after finding out some shocking information regarding her partner’s financial situation.

The bride and her partner had been dating for six years, and she got along extremely well with his three daughters. His first wife died a few years ago. They lived in a pretty average home but wore somewhat nice clothing. However, he seemed like your run-of-the-mill kind of guy, as he even snuck his own candy into the movie theater.

The man proposed to his soon-to-be wife at a fancy dinner. Everything seemed perfect until he revealed a secret he had been hiding. He was actually incredibly rich, and his family company was an extremely successful technology company worth at least $1 million.

The bride felt like she didn’t even know her partner anymore and considered putting the wedding on hold as she spent more time really getting to know every part of him. However, her groom and his daughters were in full wedding planning mode, so it seemed like she couldn’t cancel. On top of that, her friends told her it would be wrong to cancel their wedding over a problem like this.

Still unsure about what to do, the bride went to Reddit in August 2020 to ask users if they could share any advice they might have to help her move forward.

In her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) shared her engagement story. She said, “Before the world went to trash he took me out to a very fancy dinner and asked me to marry him, the girls then came out and asked me to be their mom. And they all presented me with an amazing ring he told me was a family ring. I said yes.”

Shortly after, OP’s fiancé and his kids traveled to help the fiancé’s parents with something with the family company. When they got back, her fiancé said he wanted to talk. OP explained, “Well he dropped a bombshell that what I thought was a small family company is actually a million dollar tech company. I was shocked.”

In an update, OP clarified that she wasn’t exactly sure how much her partner’s company was worth but said that if he were to ever lose $1 million, he would be completely fine with it.

OP mentioned that her partner never acted or looked rich and that he and his daughters lived in a standard home and wore nice clothes, but nothing ever too extravagant or luxurious. They split bills, flew economic class, and even snuck snacks into movie theaters. “He never told me because he wanted to find love again with someone that cared about him and his girls, not his money,” OP said.

However, her fiancé wasn’t done surprising her. It turned out that his trip was actually to set up the house they would be living in together and told OP that she could be a housewife if that would make her happy.

OP continued, “I still love him but I feel like now there is so much I don’t know about him and I want to just put a pause in the engagement and get to know him again.” However, OP’s friends said doing this would just be confirming his fear and that she should be more understanding about why he lied. On top of that, her fiancé and his daughters were in “full wedding planning mode” and OP didn’t want to hurt them since they’ve already lost so much.

“I still want to be with him but I feel like I need to get to know this part of him too,” OP said. “But everyone around me is saying to just go forward as normal as to not rock the boat but this feels anything but normal.”

Reddit users said that there was nothing wrong with OP wanting to pause her wedding but that her partner technically didn’t do anything wrong either. One user commented, “This guy had a right to hide his wealth from you and you are completely in the clear to have mixed thoughts on this situation. I think you guys should go to couples therapy.”

Another user said, “I think you will find very soon that there is no other part of him to know. He’s still him, just with deeper pockets. He has three little ladies to protect, and he did what he felt he needed to in order to make sure they stay safe and loved.”
