Fearless 73-Year-Old Skateboarder Shows Off His Unique Form In Quickly Spreading Video

Skateboarding has been a popular pastime and sport of many around the globe for years now. Originally invented in the US sometime during the 1940s or 1950s, the skateboard has been a method of transportation, tool for sports or artistic expression, toy for children, or simply a cause of entertainment for millions of people. The sport gripped the US first and then slowly expanded across the globe. It has often been advertised and seen as a sport for young people and children, even surpassing baseball as a hobby for US citizens under 18 in the early 2000s. However, this doesn't mean skateboarding is merely a children's pastime. On the contrary, more and more older people discover the joys of cruising along on a simple board. The sport was even recognized at the 2020 Summer Olympics for the first time, becoming an official Olympic category along with baseball, karate, soft climbing, and surfing.

One of the oldest followers of this sport is a 73-year-old Russian simply known as Igor. Igor lives in St. Petersburg, the second-largest city in Russia, and has been a fan of skateboarding for roughly forty years. He has honed his skill with time and experience and still takes to the streets riding his deck even now.

During one his joyrides around St. Petersburg in August 2021, Igor was seen by Max Timukhin, a surf coach driving through the city at the time. Timukhin immediately noticed Igor's seemingly odd technique, found a parking spot for his car and went up and talked to the spry gentleman.

After exchanging a few words, Timukhin recorded the footage that he later posted on Reddit. The video features Igor skating along the sidewalk using his special technique. Squatting low on the skateboard, Igor leans to the left and right as if he were skiing down a mountain in a slalom. By swiveling his hips, he changes the board's direction and keeps up his momentum.

Some of the commenters on the Reddit post joked about Igor's unique way of standing on his deck. Others, however, were amazing and quickly came to his defense. One of them wrote:

"I don't know if you've ever stood on a skateboard like that but it's tricky because your main control axis is also the one that is unrestricted - really easy to have the board fly out from under you. It's impressive the control he has while standing like that. Can recommend trying but wear a helmet first."

Another chimed in, confirming what other posters were saying:

"I've been skating and doing board sports all my life. I'm 51. I could probably *do* this foot style.

But I don't think I'd like it.

[The other user] below has it right. This old man has a gyroscope in his a**."

The reason behind Igor's special style is quite simple: the spry Russian gentleman has not only been skateboarding for forty years but also skiing for many. It's no surprise that an avid fan of two sports might have tried incorporating tricks from one into the other. In any case, Igor's fitness and passion for his sport can give viewers confidence and hope that they will not have to give up sporty hobbies in their later age.
