The process of coming out to your family can be scary. You don’t always know how they will react and the fear of rejection can leave you feeling like you need to hide a part of yourself. Daniel Diaz was 18 in July 2020, when he decided to secretly film a makeup tutorial in his bedroom.
At first, the video was going great. Diaz expertly applied a full face of makeup and false lashes, even while wearing acrylic nails. Suddenly, there was a knock on the bedroom door. Diaz quickly turned off all of the lights and sat with his computer, pretending to be working. His father, Luis Lemus, enters and immediately asks Diaz what he is doing and tells him to turn on the lights. Diaz obliged and explained that he was filming a video. When the lights are on Lemus can see the makeup and nails.
As soon as Lemus realized what his son was doing, he told him that he wanted to say something. Speaking both Spanish and English, Lemus made sure his son knew how much he is loved and told him that he accepts him. The father told his son to do what makes him happy, just do it well. Diaz was emotional at this response and tried to hold back his tears so he wouldn’t ruin his makeup for the video.
The father and son hugged for a long time and Lemus kissed Diaz on the cheek. The moment is incredibly heartwarming. Diaz said that was the first time his dad saw him wearing makeup and felt that was the moment he shared who he truly is. In the video, Diaz’s father, who calls him Papa, told him in a mix of both Spanish and English: "Whatever it is you wanna do, you'll be okay. I'll be okay with you. I'm with you, okay. I love you, Papa. If that makes you happy do it, Papa, but do it good. I'm always with you, okay? I'm not gonna drop you or anything. You be happy."
The incredible moment was posted online and has almost 300,000 views. Diaz told Newsweek: "I was just so happy. I wanted to cry but I told myself, 'NO! I won't cry because if I cry I won't be able to post this video because who's going to want to see someone crying while mascara is running down their face!' I was also filled with joy. It was just a wonderful moment for us, and thank goodness that I caught his reaction on video."
Diaz now has a special memory of his father that he can carry with him forever. "I never told my dad that I was gay, until that day I felt like I truly came out to him. I know that he knew already but I just felt that I came out to him right then and there when he caught me with makeup on. It's just so amazing how that actually turned out, and I'm so grateful to have parents who accept me for who I am," he explained.
The popularity Diaz gained from the video has really helped his Youtube career as well. He said, "It's just crazy how some kind words can change your life forever. I told my dad and he got very excited! He was crying on the phone and saying how he's so proud of me."
