Father Slammed For Trying To Change Son's Date Of Birth Because He 'Has Authority'

Oct 26, 2021 by apost team

It’s safe to say that 2020 was a difficult year for most people. One new father found the year to be so miserable that he even tried to change his newborn son’s date of birth so he wouldn’t be associated with such a challenging time. The new dad had sadly gone through some tough times during 2020. His dad passed away, he lost a close friend, and he involuntarily left his job, leaving him financially struggling.

While it’s understandable why he would want to forget that year, that’s not how birthdays work. The man’s son was born on New Year’s Eve in 2020 at 11:05 p.m. When it came time to fill out the birth certificate, he figured changing the date of birth by just one hour would be fine. However, this meant that he was going to change the month and year, too, making it appear like his son was born on Jan. 1, 2021, at 12:05 a.m.

When the nurse caught on to what he was doing, she quickly told him that it was not OK and that it wasn’t allowed. The dad was extremely irritated about this and lashed out against her, and he claimed that he had the right to do as he pleased since he was the baby’s father. He caused a scene in front of his family and newborn child, resulting in even more issues arising.

He originally posted about this ordeal on Reddit on Jan. 1, 2021, but deleted it. Fortunately, a moderator re-uploaded the post, allowing people to continue to leave their feedback and advice.

After the original poster (OP) deleted his Reddit post, a moderator re-uploaded it to the r/AmITheDevil forum. OP explained that he and his wife had their first baby at 11:05 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2020. “He’s healthy (thank God) and my wife is doing alright,” he said. A nurse gave him a form to fill out, including all of the information about the baby and his birth.

Instead of writing his son’s actual birth date and time, he decided to move it by an hour and wrote that his son was born at 12:05 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2021. “One hour difference wasn’t really a problem,” OP reasoned. However, it actually was, and the nurse stopped him and told him that he needed to refill the blanks with the exact time and date of birth.

“I argued with her about it and told her that she was making a huge deal out of it,” OP said. “And that this was unfair to my son because he only lived in 2020 for just one hour.” The new dad really didn’t want his son associated with the previous year, but the nurse warned him that what he was doing was considered forgery.

OP insisted that since he was the father, he got a say on his child’s birthday, but the nurse told him his form would not be accepted since it contained false information. The nurse got more people involved, including a pediatrician, who also told OP that he wasn’t allowed to do this.

Leaving The Past In The Past

“I told them that I’m the parent, I have the authority,” OP said. The nurse and pediatrician ended up taking the form away from him so he couldn’t fill it out. OP continued, “My wife said that I embarrassed her by making a scene and acting stupid and lashing out.” Once his wife’s family heard, they told OP that he ruined the joy of having a newborn and was stressing out his wife. However, OP’s brother was on his side.

Reddit users were floored by this man’s audacity and reprimanded him for acting like he was the only one who struggled during 2020 and for trying to falsify important documents. One user sarcastically said, “Well, you really have to feel for the guy - he’s the only person on Earth to have had a bad 2020.” Another user agreed, adding, “But you know who else had a rough 2020? The doctors and nurses he tried to bully into forging legal documents.”

Another Redditor commented, “If it’s ‘not a big deal,’ then it shouldn’t be a big deal to have it written correctly. You can’t just falsify s*** like that, and how is it ‘not fair’ for his son to only have lived in 2020 for an hour? That doesn’t even make sense. Another user explained that it was actually cool to have a birthday on New Year’s Eve and wrote, “NYE is a cool birthday. It’s like the whole world throws you a party.”

While it’s understandable why OP would want to leave 2020 in the past, trying to change his son’s birth certificate was not the way to go about it.
