Father Of 6 Belts Emotional Rendition Of 'Us," Makes Simon Break Down In Tears

Early in Season 13 of America’s Got Talent, a popular and well-known contestant received the top honor of earning the judges’ Golden Buzzer. This let him skip through the second round of cuts and perform next at the live round. When he hit the stage with a live performance, judge Simon Cowell could not hold back his tears. 

Many of the show’s regular viewers may recall Michael Ketterer’s first performance. Michael is a father to six children, and most of those children were adopted into his home through the foster care system. In addition, he is also a pediatric mental healthcare worker. More than that, he is a truly talented vocalist.

He chose to sing “To Love Somebody” by Nina Simone. After this original performance on the show, the audience was cheering wildly. The video for his audition has received over 11 million hits on YouTube.

In fact, in addition to winning the Golden Buzzer honor during his first performance, he received incredible praise from Simon Cowell. Simon is a judge who is known for his no-nonsense comments and sometimes harsh criticisms. However, he gushed about how amazing Michael was after his first performance.

The second time Michael hit the stage was during the live performance segment of the show. He chose to sing the James Bay hit, “Us.” This song has emotional lyrics, and Michael’s strong, soothing voice brought those emotions to life for Simon. In fact, by the end of the show, everyone in the room was on their feet, including all four of the judges.

Simon was so moved by the performance that he was tearing up on live television. 

Tyra Banks, the show’s host, decided to get Simon’s take on the performance first. While he tried to pass to the next judge, Tyra insisted that he say a few words. Simon gushed emotionally about what a standup guy Michael is and how talented he is. In exchange for speaking up, Tyra thanked Simon for revealing his softer side to viewers. 

Simon was not the only judge to get emotional from the performance. Mel B also appeared to be fighting back tears. Both she and Heidi Klum offered Michael exceptional praise.
