According to Bangor Daily News,  Stephen McCausland, spokesman Department of Public Safety in Maine confirmed that the body of a man named Sam Crawford was found in the rubble of his burnt house on February 4th 2019.

Reports say although he had initially managed to escape the blaze, he went back inside to save his dog and tragically never made it out.

People and Their Pets

For many people, their pets become a full-fledged family member. If the pet is in harm's way or danger, many people will go out of their way in order to protect the pet. This is sadly the story of Sam Crawford, a father of two from Orland, Maine.

What One Dad Did During a House Fire

During a house fire, Sam escaped from his house. He, his wife and their two children got out to safety. However, Sam realized that the family dog was still inside of the building. He went back inside of the house in order to try to rescue the pet.

The Aftermath of the Tragedy

Firefighters confirmed that Sam's body was found in the basement of the building. His 9 and 5 year old daughters, wife and two other adults were able to escape the fire. The blaze started in the garage but quickly spread to the living area.

Firefighters believe that the fire was sparked by a propane space heater. By the time the firefighters got to the rural home, it was fully engulfed. They had to use tanker trucks in order to get enough water to put out the fire. The family's dog is presumed to have died in the fire, too.

The Community's Reaction

Condolences poured in from the community. The family has been offered new clothing, household goods and a place to stay until their homeowner's insurance can set them up with a new place. Many people, including animal lovers, consider Sam to be a hero.

Some of the comments on social media included:

I’m so heartbroken for this family. If anyone knows this family please let them know that the community closet in Ellsworth will open so they can come get clothing, hygiene items, food, or whatever we have, at no cost, WHEN they feel ready. I know it takes time to get your thoughts together before you are ready to think about rebuilding. But when they are ready, please let them know we will be there!!!!

His wife, Casey Morse wrote in one of the comments:
