A 58-year-old father was piloting a small plane on Nov. 14, 2021, when something went wrong. His passenger was his 13-year-old daughter. According to Fox News, the plane ended up going down and crashing in a wooded area in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, specifically in Bear Creek Township.
Fox News reported that search crews and first responders spent close to five hours looking for the plane that was reported to have crashed and anyone that could have been impacted by it. At around 8:30 p.m. that night, police and search units, fortunately, found the father and daughter alive and bundled together. The duo had been huddled together trying to stay warm as they were both in what police described as a pre-hypothermic state, according to Fox News.
The small plane that the two family members had been in went down after departing from Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport, about a half-mile into the woods between Bald Mountain Road and Suscon Road, according to Fox News. The plane reportedly went missing on the radar after it went through a rapid descent, and it was difficult to get a specific location on where it ended up crashing down.
Pennsylvania State Police, along with the United States Air Force, quickly went to work searching for the crashed plane and anyone that may have been inside it at the time. Although it was hard to track the specific location from the radar, search members were, fortunately, able to use another useful piece of technology to track down the plane as well as the father and daughter.

Tracking Them Down
According to Fox News, the rescue team was able to finally track down the missing duo and their plane after pinging the father’s phone and the daughter’s iPad, ultimately leading them directly to the crash site.
The Pennsylvania State Police later issued a public information release report explaining that the father and daughter were found alive and appeared to be suffering from injuries. They were safely taken out of the heavily wooded area and brought to be seen and treated by the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Staff.
Pennsylvania State Police Sergeant John Richards was one of the officers who assisted with the search and rescue mission. “The daughter saves both of them by using her iPad and her dad was cuddling the daughter to give her warmth because they were both exposed to the elements and were suffering from hypothermia at the time,” Richards said.
Richards continued:
“They were very scared at first. Dad was extremely scared, when I first approached thinking there was an animal or something approaching his daughter. We explained who we were, that we were there to help. And immediately they start talking to us and were cooperative the whole way. They helped us every which way they could.”
News Nation reported that the father and daughter appeared to be flying from the airport toward the Poconos. Richards said that in his 28 years of service, he has never seen a plane crash like this end in this way and called it a miracle. According to Fox News, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the cause of the plane crash.
