While a lot of people get frustrated when they see squirrels robbing from the bird feeders, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who could honestly say that they didn’t think the little varmints were cute! Jannet Talbott noticed that a squirrel was visiting her bird feeder back in 2018. Initially, she thought that it was just like all the other critters that tried to steal some food from the birds but, after a few minutes of observation, she realized that this was no ordinary squirrel!

This poor squirrel was struggling to eat and had trouble keeping his food in his mouth. It took a minute for Jannet to realize what was giving the squirrel so much trouble. The poor animal’s teeth were overgrown, with some of them even curling back into his mouth!

Without help, Jannet knew that the poor squirrel would most likely be unable to survive.

After catching the squirrel with the help of her leather gloves, Jannet wrapped him in a towel and took him into her home to give him the care that he needed. With closer inspection, she saw that his teeth were curved back so much that they were in danger of poking his eyes!

Jannet explains that squirrels have teeth that grow throughout their lives; however, they usually keep them short by chewing on hard objects like nuts. Since this squirrel had an abnormal bite, he wasn’t able to consume the foods that would keep his teeth short.

With the help of some YouTube videos, Jannet decided that she would be able to take on the task of trimming the squirrel’s overgrown teeth. With the use of a cuticle trimmer, Jannet set to work and carefully trimmed the long teeth. While the process sounds like it would be painful, squirrels have no feeling in their teeth, so he was perfectly fine.

Jannet named the squirrel “Bucky” and claims that she couldn’t have asked for a better patient! Once she finished with the dental process, Jannet released him back into the wild. She watched as he was finally able to enjoy nuts and even some tree bark; foods that will help him keep his teeth in good shape.

Jannet is a hero and we’re sure that Bucky thanks her for all her hard work!
