Kathy Bates is a critically acclaimed actress, and is also known for her outstanding work as a director. The star has taken the world by storm with her incredibly long career spanning over 50 years. Bates, 76, most known for her roles in iconic movies such as “Titanic” and “Misery,” was nominated at the 2025 Golden Globes for her role as Madeline Matlock in the legal series, “Matlock.” Her talents have been seen in various projects and multiple genres in the acting world.

Bates was born June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee. Bates graduated early from White Station High School in 1965, proving her determination from the start. From the Broadway stage to the silver screen, Bates has made her presence known in the entertainment industry. She has not only showcased her incredible talents as an actress and director but has also used her platform for the betterment of others.

By engaging with multiple organizations and talking about her personal struggles, Bates has helped raise awareness for a number of causes, most of which deal with health issues. Bates has always been honest about what it’s like being a larger woman in Hollywood and has voiced her opinions on the matter multiple times.

She was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes – a condition which runs in her family – around 2017. The diagnosis motivated her to get serious about her health and make some changes. Describing the ordeal, she recalled:

“I'd seen what my father had gone through. He had had a leg amputation. One of my sisters is dealing with it very seriously, and it terrified me. It scared me straight.”

Despite her openness about health struggles, Bates has kept much of her personal life private. She married actor Tony Campisi in 1991, and the two stayed together for six years before divorcing in 1997.

Bates has dealt with some pretty serious health issues over the years. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and later with breast cancer in 2012. It wasn’t until many years later that she was finally ready to publicly share her struggles following surgeries and treatments.

“I continued to work right after the operation, doing ‘Little Black Book’ with Brittany Murphy,” Bates told People in August 2018. “My agent at the time was very old-school and didn’t want me to be the poster child for ovarian cancer. I didn’t want anyone to know, but it really took a lot out of me.”

The actress had a double mastectomy because of her family’s history with cancer following her breast cancer diagnosis. Bates beat cancer twice and is currently cancer-free, but her health struggles persisted.

Not only were fans thrilled to see Bates return to the screen in "Matlock" in 2024, but they were also stunned by her health transformation. Bates' dramatic weight loss shocked many, but she has been candid about her weight-loss journey, especially swirling Ozempic speculation.

“There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic,” Bates said. “But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.”

After dropping 100 lbs, the actress said her focus would be on her workout regime and maintaining her current weight.

“That's going to be my next thing that I'm worried about because I won't be on set running back and forth," she revealed. "I have a treadmill here at the house, and I might try Pilates. People always ask, 'Don't you want a trainer?' No, I really don't. I don't want anybody over my shoulder. It's just very important to me to keep this going. I don't want to slip.”

Bates remained optimistic and happy with her current weight and the changes in her life. Opening up about this, she said:

“Physically, I’m capable of doing this show. “I don’t have to sit down. I can stand up all day long and walk and move and breathe and do so many things that I couldn’t before.”

In 2025, Bates was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her role in “Matlock” and showed off her new figure on the red carpet. She showed off her 100lb weight loss, which she had worked for seven years to accomplish. She credited losing 80 lbs to dieting, lifestyle changes and exercising and the remaining 20 lbs to Ozempic.

Even as Bates began promoting the series ahead of its September 2024 premiere, fans were left perplexed by her slimmer face and frame.

“OMG, what happened to her? I love her, but is this even her? She was fine, before?????” one user said, while another stated simply, “I almost didn’t recognize her… her face looks so thin.

One commenter simply stated, “Ozempic face,” which received the response, “It's getting easy to spot hey.”

“Love Kathy to death but honey you can’t lose that much weight after a certain age. Your skin just hangs there,” another user chimed in on TikTok.

However, many fans left encouraging comments on their favorite actress in a video promo featuring Bates on the show’s official Instagram page.

“Gosh. I didn’t recognise Kathy. She looks great,” one fan wrote, while another remarked, “Kathy Bates looks great!”

“Kathy Bates looks amazing in her golden years,” one comment read.

The praises continued to pour in for the star after the Golden Globes.

Fans called her “beautiful," an “icon,” “gorgeous,” and “fantastic,” adding that she was “looking amazing.”

“A beautiful talented lady at any size,” one user remarked, as another said, “Kathy is looking good.”

“Absolutely stunning!!🤩” another fan enthused.

However, not everyone was as thrilled about Bates’ new look.

“Too skinny,” one comment read, as another user wrote, “So many weirdly thin people.”

“Good old Ozempic does it again 👎🏻,” a user lamented, while another said, “Ozempic really is Hollywood’s new bestie.”
