Raquel Welch, the iconic actress and sex symbol who captivated audiences with her beauty, talent, and charisma, has passed away at the age of 82. Her manager told People on Feb. 12, 2023, Welch “passed away peacefully early this morning after a brief illness.”

Born on Sept. 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Raquel was the daughter of Josephine and Armando Tejada, who was originally from Bolivia. She grew up in a tight-knit family, which instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the arts. After completing her education, she moved to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of becoming an actress.

Raquel’s big break came in 1966, when she landed the lead role in the sci-fi adventure film “One Million Years B.C.” Her stunning looks, athletic physique, and natural acting talent made her an instant star, and she quickly became a sought-after leading lady in Hollywood. She went on to appear in dozens of films and TV shows over the course of her career, including “Fantastic Voyage,” “Bedazzled,” “Bandolero!” and “The Three Musketeers,” for which Welch picked up a Best Actress Golden Globe award in 1975.

But Raquel was more than just a pretty face. She was a talented actress who was committed to her craft, and she worked tirelessly to perfect her performances. She was also a pioneer for women in Hollywood, breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes with her onscreen roles. Her characters were strong, independent women who didn’t rely on men to save the day. Instead, they took charge and made things happen on their own.

The characters Raquel played onscreen mirrored her own gumption in life. After celebrating her 70th birthday in 2010, she told People:

“I never thought life was going to give me something for nothing.”

Raquel rose to fame on the back of the sci-fi adventure film “One Million Years B.C.” even though she only had three lines in the film. Instead, it was the image of her in an animal-skin bikini that was seared into viewers’ memories and left a lasting impression. Ironically, she told The Telegraph she initially had doubts about doing the movie.

“I even complained to the studio. I was like ‘Please, please don’t make me do the dinosaur movie.’ They were like ‘No, Raquel, you don’t understand. It’s a classic. It’ll live on forever.’ Turns out they were right,” she said.

Despite her bombshell status, Raquel said she never quite got used to all the hubbub.

“I never enjoyed being photographed that much. It makes me more self-conscious than usual,” she told People.

In the ’70s, Raquel said she did all she could to counter the trend for actresses to reveal so much skin onscreen. She told AP, “I thought when you do something, you’re an actress, you know, you’re not giving away body and soul, you’re doing a performance – there’s no need to get so personal with it.”

Raquel added even though well-respected actresses were doing it at the time, she simply couldn’t bring herself to because of her upbringing.

“I always had a problem because my father was Spanish and he was very strict (about) what I could wear and… how I could have my hair. He would freak if he saw me with… a big hairdo, curls,” she explained.

Off-screen, Raquel was known for her philanthropy and dedication to causes close to her heart. She championed women’s rights and was also a staunch advocate for cancer research. She raised millions of dollars for cancer charities, including the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, over the years.

Despite her many achievements, Raquel remained humble and grounded throughout her life. She never forgot her roots, and she always stayed true to herself, even when the spotlight was shining on her. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and her family was the most important thing in her life.

Reese Witherspoon, Raquel’s co-star in the 2001 film “Legally Blonde,” led the outpouring of tributes to the cinema icon with a touching tweet.

“I loved working with her on Legally Blonde. She was elegant, professional and glamorous beyond belief. Simply stunning. May all her angels carry her home,” Witherspoon wrote.

Actor Paul Feig tweeted the world had “lost a true icon” with the passing of the “Kind, funny and a true superstar whom I was pretty much in love with for most of my childhood.”

“Melrose Place” actor Antonio Sabato Jr. also tweeted a throwback clip from an interview with Dick Cavett in which the star looked happy, gorgeous and tanned. He wrote: “Amazing beauty grace & talent. Rest in peace 🙏”

Raquel married four times and is survived by two children, Damon and Tahnee Welch, and her four grandchildren. Raquel’s passing is a great loss to the entertainment industry and to her legions of fans around the world. She will be remembered as a true icon and a trailblazer for women in Hollywood. Her beauty, talent, and spirit will live on in the many films and TV shows she left behind, as well as in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved her.
