Societal beauty standards have affected how we see ourselves, how others see us, and how we determine our self-worth. According to ManiFold, society's perception of beauty is based on numerous factors, such as evolution, racism and social media. But in recent years, beauty standards have become highly impressionable and limiting. These idolized beauty standards have devalued many people who don't fit into society's conception of beauty. For example, WooPlus, a dating app geared toward plus-size women, surveyed 1,000 of its curvy users. The results revealed that 71% of its 1,000 users said they had felt fat-shamed on regular dating apps due to their size.

Such sentiments are not lost on plus-size TikTok star Alicia Mccarvell, who has gone viral for her mixed-weight relationship with her husband, Scott. Mccarvell often posts TikTok videos showing the couple working out together, dancing, and adding a creative twist to popular TikTok trends. In one viral TikTok video, the body-positive content creator recorded a trending transition video, which garnered millions of views. The video started with her and Scott in their towels and then transitioned to them in date night attire.

After posting the video, Mccarvell was overwhelmed with negative comments regarding her weight and how Scott, a physically fit man, could be attracted to her. Some commenters accused Scott of being with Mccarvell for her money, suggested she was not overweight when they first met and went as far as to question Scott's sexuality.

In a response video, the Canadian influencer countered the negative commentary about her relationship, slammed society's beauty standards and the commenters who believed that because of her husband's physical appearance, he could not possibly be genuinely in love with her.

In the response video, Mccarvell explained how many viewers put Scott on a higher pedestal than her because of her weight.

"The world looks at us and immediately values Scott more than me," she shared. "Since we don't add up, people try to add things to my side of the equation to make it make sense by saying things like 'Oh, she must not have been fat when they met' or 'Oh, she's gotta be rich.' Or they try to decrease his side of the equation by saying things like 'He must be gay' or 'He fetishizes fat women.' We've been made to believe that somebody who is physically fit, like Scott, could never in a million years be in love with or compatible with a fat woman — and that's solely because the world has literally taught us that we have to value our worth on our bodies."

Mccarvell also revealed many women had slid into her husband's DMs, attempting to lure him away from her or encouraging Scott to leave her for someone thinner and more fit. Although many women sought out her husband's attention, Mccarvell explained that she was not jealous.

"When people typically slide into his DMs, they're leading with their body first," she explained. "And on the scale of what my husband values, how well my body fits into the beauty standards is not on the top of his list. He values my humor, and my commitment, and my love, and my caring heart. None of these things that he values about me change if my body changes."

As Mccarvell mentioned, physical appearance does not add or decrease the value of anybody's self-worth. She ended her video by sharing how it's our responsibility to unlearn "society's trash beauty standards."

Even though Mccarvell received several negative comments on the post, she began receiving kinder words in her social media comments section following her authentic videos. Several users lauded Mccarvell for standing up for herself. Another person shared that Mccarvell's videos were inspiring and had even helped them feel better about themselves.

“This is really hard to say but your channel has made me feel so empowered and willing and beautiful,” one user wrote.

Mccarvell also began receiving kinder comments on her response video to her viral video. While Mccarvell had explained that her video appeared to have gone viral for all the wrong reasons, one person commented, “This should go viral for all the right reasons.”

Mccarvell received even more praise and kindness from her followers after posting some fun beach snaps while on vacation with her husband. On Aug. 1, 2023, Mccarvell revealed that she and Scott were happily soaking up the sun in Miami when they took the photos. Mccarvell looked ravishing in an aquamarine two-piece swimsuit as Scott looked lovingly at his beautiful wife.

Fans gushed about how happy the couple looked as they shared kisses and smiles under the palm trees. “I mean goodness!’🔥🔥🔥 Look at the look in his eyes looking at you, especially in that last picture! How can anyone ever say this is fake?! I just love y’all!” one comment read, while another user remarked, “When she finally see herself the way he always has ❤️😍❤️”

Even Texan influencer and radio personality Elena Davies piped up in the comments to dub the pair “Barbie and Ken???” The sentiment was shared by more users, including one who commented, “Real life Barbie and ken 🤪”
