Life is given to everyone as a gift, for us to cherish it and share good times together. All of us, as long as we are alive, we directly or indirectly contribute to the livelihood of one another. We should make sure that our contribution is positive. Other people tend to be very significant in other people’s lives not because of material possession but because they make other people’s lives worth living.

On the other hand, some people take other people’s lives for granted, which is so wrong. For such people, a drastic measure is to be made. This is because taking advantage of someone else life and treating them coldly could impact very negative forces towards the individual and could possibly end up fatal. Suicide, which is the act of taking one’s own life, is a result of all these negative forces towards someone. Sadie Riggs, who is a victim of this unfortunate act, died on June 19, 2017.

Miss Sadie Riggs, a teenager from Bedford, took her own life by hanging on Monday 19th June. Sadie, who was 15 years only, upon her passing was a kind and sweet girl who lived with her parents. Sadie loved playing softball, reading and listening to music like every other teenager.

Though not very privileged to be brought up by both of her biological parents, her father Eric Riggs and her stepmother Alicia Smith loved and cherished her as their own. Sadie went to school like every other kid, and she had just joined high-school before she passed on. Just like any teenager, Miss Riggs was so excited to join high-school knowing that could be her last stop in life.

Miss Riggs was being bullied in school. Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to coerce someone into doing something, especially what they won’t enjoy doing.

Bullying occurs everywhere; at schools, at our respective working places, cyber-bullying that happens typically through social media. It can be both physical and mental and affects people in diverse age-groups. It is considered to be evil and punishable by the law.

This is because the act leaves those who fall victim in a devastated situation or even worse. It instills fear and makes those who fall victim feel worthless. This intimidating act got Sadie so troubled that she could not take it anymore that she decided to take her own life. Her parents could not fathom that even with counseling and medication, this intimidating act still caused the loss of such a young soul.

Sadie’s death shocked many, both family and friends. Her death has brought her family especially her parents into a very dark moment in their life.

Some of her friends in school have been left paralyzed with fear and traumatized by her death. Her parents, still grieving, showed appreciation for her life by giving thanks to God for the opportunity of having her in their lives. Sadie’s parents again did not overlook what caused her death.

After the tragic release of news of her sudden death, due to disbelief, a lot of rumors had been going on over the report. This made her parents take a step of courage and inform people of what happened. Mr. and Mrs. Riggs majorly did this to get the platform to educate people and condemn the act of bullying, both online and institutions of learning. The whole truth about Sadie, how she died and what caused it was all in her obituary.

The death of young people is very disheartening. There is so much that a young person can offer. Young people are hopeful for life and a future, sending out this strong social message was a significant step to overcome negative social interactions because it all starts from the roots.

Sadie’s story has brought out other hidden painful suicide stories of people who are really young. Others who died by hanging just like Sadie, others overdosed, poisoning and different disappointing ways. If you think about it, instead of young people getting so worked up with life so soon before it even really begins, we better have old people ironically committing suicide.

This is because at-least for aged people they gave life a shot, they tried to live and feel life, enjoy it and get to contribute to it.

Sadie’s parents did not file charges against the students who were said to have been the cause of their daughter’s depression that led to her taking her own life. They instead forgave them and left them in the mercies of God. With the pain of losing an only child, all they did was forgive them and wish them the best. This showed their sincerity to want to instill positivity and kindness in people despite our differences. Life is so precious, and everyone should wish for other people to enjoy it and live and if others find it hard to make others happy at-least do not hurt them. Everyone matters. The message from the obituary was not only insisting on kindness in our interactions, but the harmonious living of citizens regardless of age, color or ethnic extraction.

To parents, it brought a need for being a little more sensitive with their kids. They should pay more attention to them and get to know them from their level. This will enhance the parent-child relationship and will help the kids to be more open and share their feelings more including their fears and troubles.

Parents and guardians, being the first people in a kid’s life, can contribute to shaping a kids life in all directions and character wise. We should bring up our kids to be strong to overcome obstacles and troubles in life. No one needs to be made to feel like their life is worthless whether they contribute to the society or not.

Even if someone is different and does not fit in, they deserve and should still be treated equally.

Treat your neighbor like you would love and expect your neighbor to treat you back.
