Christmas usually comes with many surprises, but a family living in Georgia was totally unprepared for this one.

In an interview with CNN, Katie McBride Newman reported that her daughter India was removing dishes from the table after dinner, when her little girl expressed her surprise. Katie continued to explain that 10-year-old India came into the room she was in and started crying. She said that her daughter told her the ornament frightened her.

Because Katie adores owls, her Christmas tree was decorated with approximately 12 trinkets that resembled this bird. Katie figured the 10-year-old had simply caught sight of one of the trinkets, but as the girl’s mother examined the decorations, the head on one of the trinket’s spun around.

The surprised woman realized that the trinket wasn’t a trinket at all. She realized the owl was real. She also discerned that the bird had probably been in the tree since they bought it, which was more than a week ago.

Katie and her family gave the owl the opportunity to fly away by opening the windows as well as the doors and leaving them open. The owl decided to stay, however, so they contacted the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Since Katie didn’t know when the owl last ate, instructions were given to make uncooked chicken available for the bird.

The owl was captured on Saturday. They discovered it was an Eastern Screech-Owl, which is a common owl species in Georgia according to the Georgia Department of Natural resources. Since the owl was very slim when it was finally captured, they figured it had probably been in the tree for more than seven days. The owl was examined, fed, and given nutritional supplements. Katie and her husband were told to let the bird free during the night, after leaving it in a room without any light.

They did as instructed that Saturday evening, and the owl left. Katie stated to CNN she thinks she hears the owl screeching after the sun goes down.

What do you think about this owl hiding in their tree? What's the strangest thing you've ever found in your Christmas tree?
