Family From Baltimore Adopts Senior Dog In Maryland Shelter In Order To Give Her The Best Last Days

Many families tend to look for puppies when they want to adopt a dog. One major reason is that puppies usually look their most adorable in their youngest days. While this is true, puppies are also prone to do things that older dogs have usually grown out of. Puppies tend to chew up things all over the house, bark all the time, and have frequent accidents on the floor.

Many people also shy away from older dogs because they are worried about costly health problems. Many dogs are abandoned in shelters because they have health issues that cost a lot in vet visits and medication costs. Their owners believe that someone will adopt them and take care of their needs; however, the opposite is typically true. Too many older and ill dogs are euthanized when the shelters run out of space for them.

Melissa Davis decided to go dog-shopping one day with her daughter Raven. As reported by the Petco Foundation, they intended to find a senior dog that needed love and affection. They specifically searched for a dog that they would be able to provide for during her or his last days. Kaylee, an 11-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, was that lucky dog.

Kaylee was abandoned after her health began to deteriorate. She had thyroid carcinoma, a torn ACL, and early kidney disease. However, that didn't stop this family from taking her home and giving her an amazing life. Raven created a bucket list for the dog through a Facebook page and even won a ten thousand dollar grant from a Petco campaign.

The family canceled a Disneyland trip to give the senior dog a good time while she was still alive, as the Petco Foundation wrote. Kaylee accomplished a few things on the list before she passed away, including eating a "puppachino," singing songs with her family, eating at a cheese buffet, and having a brownie cake. Although the family was sad when Kaylee passed away, Raven's mother made a video showing all of the fun moments that they did have with the older dog.

If you can do it, consider adopting an older dog. They need our love and affection just as much as any puppy, and they will fill your life with love and happiness while they are with you.
