Family Adopts Stray Cat, Shortly After It Becomes Newborn's Best Friend

Sometimes best friends aren't of the same species. Such is the case at Happy Tails Farm Sanctuary – where a rescued cat became best friends with a human infant.

A Good Samaritan rescued a stray cat and brought her to Happy Tails Farm Sanctuary to get the care she desperately needed. The cat had been walking the streets of Kingston, Ontario. When she arrived at the sanctuary, she had swollen and infected eyes as well as a limp from a broken pelvis. Though the sanctuary is almost exclusively focused on caring for farm animals, Carla felt there was something exceptional about this cat, and she immediately agreed to take her in and give her the love and care she needed.

They named the gorgeous Siamese, Sapphire. For the first day, Sapphire hid, but she quickly realized that she was safe and began to explore her new environment. Eventually, she started curling up with Carla and her husband, but she was especially drawn to their infant daughter, Mary, who was one month old at that time.

Sapphire initially watched from a distance, but it didn't take her long to get close to Mary. Watching Carla mother Mary seemed to bring out the cat''s own maternal instincts. Sapphire was uneasy whenever the family dog was around, so when he was in the vicinity, Sapphire would run over to the baby and stand guard, as if to protect Mary.

Sapphire wanted to be with Mary often. She began to put her arms around the infant and bury her face in Mary's neck. Sapphire and Mary's bond continued to grow stronger, and Carla soon found them napping together with Sapphire's paw wrapped protectively around the infant.

Carla says that it's a true love story, “one that transcends time, transcends space, and may even defy logic.”

Carla and Harold Moore founded Happy Tails Farm Sanctuary in 2013. It's family-operated with the help of volunteers and became a registered charity in 2017. Though they initially began as a pot belly pig sanctuary, they quickly added several species of herd animals and birds.
