Adopting a new pet is a major life decision. Whether it’s a new dog or cat, you are altering your life by choosing to bring an animal into your home that may have had a rough start in life. Yet 11 families looking to adopt a puppy with a wonderful back story were all shocked when they were told to reach under their seats at the Michigan Humane Society to pull out a piece of paper. Those papers contained the number in which each family would now choose their future family member!

Yet the story doesn’t start there. This story begins in July 2017 when a Good Samaritan in Detroit heard noises from a nearby residence. Due to recent flooding activity in the area, the individual knew whatever was making those noises needed help and needed it fast. The Michigan Humane Society was there to save the day! When the humane society workers arrived, they found a large muddy pit in the backyard. Trying to escape the rains, a momma dog now known as Raina had dug deep into the earth and the noises coming from that hole belonged to eleven little shepherd mix puppies.

After the Humane Society rescued both Raina and the puppies, they were rehabilitated at the shelter and then put up for adoption. The new families arrived eager to pick their new pups and were surprised to learn they would be choosing their dogs in a random fashion. As they looked at their numbers, there were random smiles and laughter.

The puppies frantically licked and jumped on their potential homes and each pup managed to charm its way into a new family’s heart. Whether it was due to color, personality, or sex, the adoptive families just knew the puppy they chose would be the right one for their home. Yet the most blessed news out of this event was even momma Raina found a new home that day—she was adopted and headed to a new home as well.
