Children are truly life’s greatest blessing. Child live as life intended, without bias or prejudice, but with complete sincerity and purity. The love of a child should never go unnoticed by the adults in their lives, and children love their parents beyond anything else.
Recently, a 4-year-old boy in New York showed how much he loved his father at the most difficult of times.
Ryan Lemm served his community and his nation with distinction as a detective with the New York Police Department and in the Air National Guard. Originally from Nebraska, the dad of two was known as “Superman” by his fellow officers for his strong physique and second to none skills.
Tragically, Detective Lemm was killed in a suicide bombing during a deployment to Afghanistan.

The death was a gut-wrenching tragedy for Lemm’s family.
As his family and the NYPD gave Lemm a hero’s funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the heart of Manhattan, Lemm’s son, 4-year-old Joseph, entered the church on the shoulder of Lemm’s partner, Detective John McCrossen. Joseph wore his father’s detective shield and carried his police hat in his tiny hands.
Standing outside the church, Joseph gave his father a crisp salute as the honor guard carried his casket into the beautifully adorned place of worship. Joseph had seen his father salute other officers and knew it as a mark of the highest respect.
Joseph's gesture soon moved those in attendance to tears, even making national news headlines.
During the funeral mass, which was overseen by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, officer after officer regaled those in attendance with their stories of Lemm, telling of how compassionate and heroic the fallen hero was during his 15-year career with the department. Lemm’s daughter, 17-year-old Brooke, read a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes, which told of the importance of healing.
