Twenty-three-year-old officer Charles Irvine Jr. recently lost his life while on duty. The brave young officer was involved in a fatal auto accident while pursuing a suspect in Milwaukee.

A few days after Officer Irvine's tragic accident, Avant Turner walked by the memorial constructed in honor of the fallen officer. The attention of the 12-year-old boy was captured by a police cruiser which had once belonged to Officer Irvine.

The car was now draped in black with flowers and gifts from the local community placed atop and beside the car. The flowers and gifts were so numerous that Avant could not see under the police cruiser.

Avant wondered who the squad car belonged to until he noticed a photo of officer Irvine among the flowers.

Avant was in shock. He knew the fallen officer. The boy and the officer had recently formed a friendship that had gone unnoticed by everyone.

Avant was deeply affected by the grief he felt at learning of his friend's untimely demise. Avant struggled with the emotion he was feeling and decided to put his thoughts on paper while at school.

Avant returned to the memorial after school and placed the handwritten letter he composed among the sea of flowers and gifts. And while the single piece of white paper may not have been as catchy to the eye as the colorful bouquets and trinkets at the memorial, the words written by Avant were the most personal gift left at the memorial. Avant thanked Officer Irvine for being his friend and thanked the officer for taking time out to help him.

Avant explained he would often stop by the precinct on his way to school. He says Officer Irvine would talk to him about school and life and sometimes help him with school work. He says no one knew about the friendship he developed with the officer. Avant says he will miss his friend.
