Faithful Dog Waited By His Owner’s Empty Hospital Bed Long After Body Had Been Taken Away

Human friends may come and go, but the love of a dog remains forever. This statement was proven true recently by a three-year-old lab mix named Moose. Moose is a loyal dog that had grown very attached to his human.

Tragically, Moose’s owner got very sick and had to be confined to a hospital bed. Rather than give up on him, Moose sat on the floor by his side, waiting on his favorite person to get well. In the end, recovery was not possible and Moose lost his dear friend.

Realizing that something wasn’t right, Moose continued to sit by his owner’s hospital bed, long after the body had been taken away. Lost in grief and hoping that his owner would return, Moose sat patiently and stared out the window. Heartbroken by the scene of the loyal pup waiting on his master to return, someone caught a picture of the image and shared it with both NorthStar Pet Rescue and Eleventh Hour Rescue, both of which turned to Facebook to publish the dog’s sad story.

The dog rescues pointed out on their posts that Moose was generally happy and sweet; however, after the loss of his dad, he needed someone new to help heal his heart.

While losing a pet is never easy for a human, Moose made it clear that losing a human is certainly not easy for a pet, either. The American Kennel Club explains that dogs and humans may share a lot of the same emotions, with their brains lighting up in the same areas when they are feeling certain things. To a dog, it seems, a human is more than just a meal ticket – instead, the human is their very best friend and only family.

Even after Moose had lost his human, he waited patiently for him to come back, unable to accept the truth.

With no one to take him in, Moose soon found himself at the shelter in Rockaway Township, New Jersey. The rescue center added his photo online in hopes of locating the perfect forever family for him.

The Eleventh Hour Rescue, where Moose was sent, made a plea on Facebook, explaining that Moose had been returned to them and that he was taking the loss of his owner pretty hard. They went on to say that Moose would thrive best in a home where there were lots of loving people and he wouldn’t have to be alone all day since he is very social and attached. They also reported that while Moose doesn’t mind other dogs, it’s the humans that really get to his heart.

Just when it seemed like this might be the sad end to Moose’s story, the adoption applications began to flood the rescue center. So many people were touched by Moose’s devotion to his human dad and were anxious to do what they could to fill the emptiness in his heart. It only took a few days for the rescue to match Moose with the perfect family. They went on Facebook to share the news that Moose would soon be going home, and followers were ecstatic!

The comments quickly began to roll in with people wishing Moose well at his new home and saying how happy they were that he had found a forever family. Of course, while all the comments were positive, we’re sure that there were a lot of disappointed people who had hoped to take Moose home themselves! Can you blame them?

While Moose may have found a new home, the shelter and rescue centers are still full of other dogs and puppies who are grieving following the loss of their humans. You can always contact an organization to see about opening your heart and home to one of them.

Moose may not be ready to give up the memory of his first human but we’re sure that with the help of a loving family, he will soon learn how to attach to new humans and the old joy will return to his heart once again.

If you want to help dogs just like Moose, consider sending this story to your friends so they will see how much grieving dogs need our love. Maybe one of them will want to rescue a grieving dog as well!
