Experts Say That It Wasn't Just An Iceberg That Sunk The Titanic

From the blockbuster 1997 film to elementary school curriculum, everyone knows about the ill-fated Titanic, sunk by an iceberg and arrogance. However, according to experts, everything we know about the legendary shipwreck isn't exactly accurate.

For a little refresher for those who've forgotten the details, the RMS Titanic was a passenger ship that was on its first voyage from England to New York City when it supposedly hit a large iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean close to Halifax, Canada.

It is one of the deadliest shipwrecks in history with more than 1500 people dying, either by drowning or freezing to death in the bone-chilling water.

However, according to new research by experts, it was actually a fire in the ship's hull that was the primary reason for the shipwreck.

They stated that the fire burned for three weeks prior to sinking before it was noticed. The evidence behind this claim can be seen in photographs of the hull, as a 30-foot black mark can be seen on the hull. The fire weakened the structural integrity of the boat, thus giving the iceberg the ability to tear apart the boat.

The fire is theorized to have started near the boiler rooms where the fuel is stored. A dozen ship workers tried to put out the flames, but they burned to temperatures of over 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, making containment difficult.

"It's a perfect storm of extraordinary factors coming together: fire, ice and criminal negligence. Nobody has investigated these marks before. It totally changes the narrative. We have metallurgy experts telling us that when you get that level of temperature against steel it makes it brittle, and reduces its strength by up to 75 per cent. The fire was known about, but it was played down. She should never have been put to sea," stated Titanic researcher Senan Molony in a documentary about the Titanic.

While the ship likely would have completed its maiden voyage if it weren't for the fire damage, the iceberg also played a key role in the ship's tragic demise.
