After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bombshell announcement about stepping back as 'senior' members of the royal family, the media and public have been scrambling to discover what this will mean for the future. The couple announced they will be splitting their time between the U.S., Canada and the U.K., leading many Canadians to believe they will have to foot the Sussexes' security bill.

Reuters reports Queen Elizabeth and her heir to the throne Prince Charles along with Prince William, Harry’s elder brother, are all gathering to meet at Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England.

Taking to their official Instagram account last week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a shocking statement announcing they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and “work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

Security experts told The Mirror that Justin Trudeau’s government in Canada will be legally obligated to provide security for Meghan and Harry because of their royal status.

Larry Busch, an ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who did security for royals in Canada said, “I don’t believe they can refuse the government of Canada’s security." Another security expert Mike Zimet believes this bill could run into the millions.

Canadian users on Twitter have voiced their outrage at the possibility of Meghan and Harry coming to Canada. One user wrote, "Two freeloaders wanting to come to Canada to further burden the taxpayers of this country. Stay where you are, we don’t want you.”

While another said, '“Canadian taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars a year in security expenses if Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan move there, even part time,'"Which is, one of many reasons, why we don’t want them here!!"

It has been circulating in the media that Trudeau could make Harry the country's governor-general. While many people are outraged on social media, a poll by Dart and Maru/Blue found 60 percent of Canadians said they would back the Prince as governor-general.

However, on Twitter, one user said, "The governor-general gets a salary for life. No way do I want to see Harry living off the Canadian taxpayer for the next multiple decades."

While no news is confirmed Harry and Meghan will make their second home in Canada, the Mirror reports there is speculation the couple could settle in Los Angeles to be close to Meghan's mother Doria Ragland.
