It has been years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from their royal duties and uprooted their family to California in a move often called “Megxit.” Since then, Prince Harry’s nephews, Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, and his niece, Princess Charlotte, 9, have not been able to spend time with their uncle as much. They are spending their childhood at the picturesque Adelaide Cottage near Windsor Castle with their parents, Prince William and Princess Catherine. Their cousins, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, are growing up on the other side of the Atlantic in a stunning mansion in Montecito.

In a GB News exclusive, a royal commentator speculated that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were “likely asking questions” about their uncle, who used to be more present in their lives. Due to Harry’s estrangement from his brother, Prince William, and his move to California, Harry has also been missing out on the growth of his nephews and niece.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, royal commentator Lydia Alty discussed the current relationship between Prince Harry and his young niece and nephews. She first acknowledged the formerly close bond that Prince Harry used to share with his elder brother and his family, saying:

“Prince Harry used to be close to his brother, Prince William. He was also very close to Prince William’s wife, the Princess of Wales and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.”

She added that despite the age-old rumors, Prince Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III, is better than most believe.

“Harry was even close to his father, despite reports and claims from him that he wasn’t,” she clarified.

But just where does the royal family stand now?

In Prince Harry’s book, “Spare,” he stated that his relationship with William and Catherine began changing over time, leading to him being “invited over” less and less and feeling alienated by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“I took it for granted that I would be invited to their house at any moment. But the days went by, and it didn’t happen,” he wrote. “I understand, I thought. They’re busy! Building a family! Or maybe… three’s a crowd. Maybe if I get married things will change.”

While he was able to bond with his eldest nephew and niece, George and Charlotte, the same could not be said for Prince Louis, who was only 2 years old when Prince Harry cut ties with the royal family. However, despite the troubled relations, Prince Harry went out of his way to gift his youngest nephew a 1926 original edition of the children’s classic storybook “Winnie the Pooh” by A.A. Milne, valued at £8k. It seems as though the Duke of Sussex tried his best to be a present uncle to the three children. The gift was inspired by Princess Diana’s passion for collecting first editions of literary classics.

Alty theorized this would only make the Wales children more likely to wonder why they don’t see their uncle and cousins often.

“Now that the royals have all split up and, as far as we know, not talking, this will have affected George, Charlotte and Louis. His nephews and niece will probably be wondering why they haven’t seen their uncle and cousins,” Alty postulated.

Harry himself also previously expressed concern about Prince William’s two youngest children ending up being treated like spares, much as he was to his brother.

“Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare,” Harry told The Telegraph.

However, Prince William and Princess Catherine have been said to be taking measures to avoid this. Parenting expert Jo Frost said:

“I think William and Catherine understand the importance of nurturing the sibling relationships between the three of them. Dare I say it, in their family, it would never be the ‘heir and spare’. It would be about the importance of all of them.”
