Every Adoptable Animal At Chicago Animal Shelter Has Been Taken Home

Every animal that was available to adopt at the Chicago Animal Care and Control has been taken home on April 7.

The shelter announced the great news on their Facebook page, saying that they were officially out of adoptable animals, with the caveat that the animals that were in the shelter were "on hold for various reasons including the stray waiting period, rabies observation, or they are waiting for their owners to pick them up."

They also added that they were still accepting rescue animals so they would probably have more coming in the following days.

The shelter manager Jenny Schlueter told Block Club Chicago that it was the very first time in their history where this has happened. It seems to be a pattern during the coronavirus outbreak where people are adopting pets at a high rate.

“It’s times like these that we see the best in our community. From the beginning of this COVID-19 crisis, the outpouring of care and concern for our animals has been extraordinary,” said Julia Poukatch, a spokeswoman for PAWS Chicago, according to Block Club Chicago. “It shows how our community cares deeply about homeless animals and wants to be there for cats and dogs in times of crisis.”

As predicted, the shelter filled up again a few days later and there are still animals available to adopt and take to their forever homes. As of April 11 there are dogs, cats, roosters, and rabbits to adopt.
