Envious Husband Talks To His Wife At Long Last Following Two Decades Of Silent Treatment

Every now and then, it’s common for couples to get into arguments that result in some pretty awkward silences afterward. Sometimes people need a minute to cool down and collect themselves before they feel ready enough to sensibly express their feelings. However, this sulking period can sometimes last longer than expected. For one husband from Japan, he found that he needed quite a lot of time to get over the negative feelings he had toward his wife.

Otou Katayama spent 20 years not speaking to his wife Yumi despite living with her and their three children. Although the married pair stayed together, it was clear that there was a huge divide in their relationship and that they had some evident issues they needed to overcome.

Katayama only ever nodded or grunted in response to anything Yumi said during this long period of time where he gave his wife a prolonged silent treatment. He had been dealing with some negative emotions and was specifically upset and jealous about how much attention Yumi gave to others that weren’t him.

Their household surely must not have felt like a home as one of the couple’s children decided that enough was enough. Their 18-year-old son named Yoshiki, was tired of seeing his father refuse to speak to his mother and wanted this two-decade silent treatment to stop. Finally, that time had arrived. For the first time in 20 years — and the first time that the three children had seen their father speak to their mother in a very long time — Katayama spoke to Yumi.

After spending two decades refusing to speak to his wife, Katayama finally made a change for the better after his 18-year-old son intervened. According to the Daily Mail, Yoshiki wrote into a TV show asking for help with fixing the sad situation between his parents. He had never even heard them have a conversation with each other.

The executives behind the show quickly got to work helping to repair the torn relationship Katayama and Yumi were experiencing. The pair were later arranged to meet in the same park where they had their first date so many years back, all while being filmed. On top of that, their three eager yet emotional children watched on from a nearby area.

Finally, Katayama decided to say something to his wife. “Somehow it’s been a while since we talked,” he said. “You were so concerned about the kids.” As he continued, Katayama had a few compliments to give to Yumi, giving her the love and adoration she had been missing for the past 20 years. 

“Yumi, up until now, you have endured a lot of hardship,” Katayama said. “I want you to know I’m grateful for everything.” The man finally revealed what had been the reason behind his prolonged silent treatment. Talking about all of the attention Yumi gave their children, he said, “I was kind of… jealous. I was sulking about it.”

Katayama continued, “There’s no going back now I guess.” While it was clear that he had been hurt, it seemed like he overcame his negative feelings and was finally ready to get back on track with his relationship with Yumi.
