Entitled Husband Demands 50% Of Wife’s Business Profits After Criticizing It, Wife Isn’t Having Any Of It

Finding a job you love can be difficult. If you’re someone who loves the outdoors, spending hours locked in an office every day can be incredibly draining. One woman found a way to take an outdoor hobby she loves and turned it into a successful business. Everything was going great until her husband demanded he receive 50% of the profit because the flower selling business was started in his home.

The woman posted her story on Reddit to determine if she was in the wrong for calling her husband’s claim “delusional,” and not entertaining his request. She explained that she has always loved gardening, and when she asked her husband what he thought of her trying to sell the flowers she grows, he laughed her off. It turned out that he was wrong, and the homemade bouquets were a huge hit. After just 18 months, the wife’s business has regular customers and she is making a good amount of money.

It was only after he saw the business doing well that the husband claimed he was part owner and deserved half of the profit because he owns the soil the plants were grown in. When the wife pointed out that she owns the house as well the husband said that he had owned it before she moved in so it is his alone.

The wife explained in her post that the couple keeps their finances separate and that her husband works at a bank and makes plenty of money. He also does not share his income with her, so the wife thinks it is unfair for him to demand half of her business’s profit. Keep reading to see what other users had to say about the situation.

The husband in the story seems to be very financially motivated. The woman shared in her post on Reddit: “The other day he was standing with his drink while I was checking my flowers. He talked about what a good job I was doing keeping ‘our’ business ‘flowing.’ I corrected him about it being our business and reminded him about how little faith he had in my potential to make decent money out of growing and selling cut flowers.”

She continued, “He was like ‘Well...I didn't honestly think your little gardening hobby was going to get anywhere but now that business is flourishing I want my fair share of profit and won't settle for less than 50%’”

The tension continued to grow between the couple. "I said this is our house/our soil, not just his since we're married and both our names are on the title. He was like ‘actually I owned this house long before you came along so it's technically mine!’ I replied that he must be aware it'll be split in half in case of separation. He laughed and joked about how silly I was for ‘hinting’ separation just because he was asking for something that he so richly deserves, which is 50% of the profit," the wife explained.

She added, “I said it didn't matter to him when I started using ‘his soil’ why now? He said it always matters when money is involved! We had an argument about it and he apologized BUT ONLY for approaching the subject rudely but still wants 50%. He's been silent about it since stating that he already said what he needed to say and I needed to make the right decision.”

The woman’s post has gone viral and thousands of people left their comments and reactions to the story. One person commented, “I really hope you're consulting a divorce lawyer. Your husband just showed his true colors and the picture isn't pretty at all. Leave him to rot on ‘his’ soil and plant a new garden somewhere else without an entitled burden.”

Most of the users could see right through the husband’s motives. “I think I can see why he's been divorced before. He has a very you vs. me mentality. In a healthy marriage, one party's success is success for both. He should want you to be doing well. Instead, he sees any success you have as an attack on him. Yikes,” said another person

They added, “‘Money has never been an issue’ because you have so far allowed him to feel like he's winning and 'getting one over' on you. ‘It's not like he needs money’ should be a wake-up call for you!! He doesn't even need the money. He's just upset that you have it now.”

The wife’s partner seems to have a skewed perception of what it takes to start a successful business. A third user commented, “Divorce him and take half the soil and half the plants. He can try to maintain the business by himself if the soil is all he thinks it takes to run the business.”

Many of the people commenting had legal advice for the wife. Someone else suggested, “You need to visit a lawyer ASAP to get your business registered in just your name and to look into a postnup. You need to protect yourself here!”
